Does anyone on here have an actual VFD eye tattoo on your ankle? I've thought before about getting one, but my family is so staunchly anti-tattoo that I doubt it'll ever happen, even as an adult. For right now, I'm one of those who just draws the eye on her ankle with a Sharpie, haha. If you don't have a VFD tattoo, have you considered getting one? Or do you ever draw yourself a tattoo with a marker like me? xD

The ankle is one of the more painful places to get tattooed, owing to the vibration of the tattoo needle against your ankle bones, so I wouldn't get one there, personally. Not to mention that tattoos are against my religion, but that almost never stops me from doing something, in reality. More than anything, the fear of having a tattoo that's not original and artistically pleasing enough to be worth the pain and lasting a lifetime is what stops me.

Yes, I've heard before that the ankle would be a very painful place to get a tattoo. (Yet another reason why I'll likely never actually do it; I'm pretty much a wimp, haha.) I guess more than for aesthetic reasons or originality, I'd want to get a VFD tattoo because of what it means to me--the importance of being literate and informed, and having your own opinions and ideas. It's an idea that I know I'll keep with me forever, like the only other tattoo I've ever considered getting: a small cross, for what Jesus has done for me. So it's not so much for me about the design as for remembering what it means. That's interesting about your religion, I've never heard of a religion banning tattoos (although admittedly I haven't studied religion very much--9th grade World History's about the extent, unfortunately). If you don't mind my asking, what is your religion?

I'm Jewish, the prohibition against tattooing comes from Leviticus 19:28- "'You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you. I am G-d." Some denominations are more strict about this than others, mine is pretty laissez-faire, but if you do get tattoos, you forfeit your right to be buried in a Jewish cemetery, so I don't think it's worth it unless I have an idea for a design that's really great and highly personal and meaningful.

I think Emma has a VFD tattoo...but I think it's on her upper arm? Not sure.

also pain, if i'm getting pain it would be for something more personal than a thing from a book

My friend's mom has a Star of David tattoo. I always thought that was kind of ironic.

Your friend's mom could end up winning a hipster medal for that! I hear it's shaped like a golden can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. I remember someone I know suggesting that he'd get a tattoo of a hamburger on his arm so he could order food in Japan. He got upset when I told him tattoos are viewed rather dimly in Japan, to the point where he probably wouldn't be allowed into a bathhouse.

As for me, VFD, Snicket and this site are pretty personal things for me, and I haven't been able to think of something more appropriate. I figured I'd wait til I was 25, and if I still want to get it done then, I figure I always will.

I think Emma has a VFD tattoo...but I think it's on her upper arm? Not sure. You're right, mine is located on my upper right arm. I had planned to get it on my left ankle, before my brother said he knew someone who'd gotten a tattoo there, and apparently it rubbed off soon after. To be honest, I prefer having my tattoo on my arm, just because it's more noticeable. While its purpose is to signify my love for the series, it's also a symbol for my love of writing. And, of course, a tribute to the man whose stories inspired me to want to pursue it. I'll have had my tattoo five years come December 26, 2012.

There's a couple of them posted on this blog. I've definitely thought about getting the VFD eye on my ankle ... if I were to do it, though, I think I'd for sure go with the TCC illustration type rather than the official stationery insignia.

I have one. It hurt a lot, but I am glad I did it. Just make sure you get it right. Like some people are stupid and get the tat on their right ankle or the outside of their left. IMO, if you get the VFD eye, get it in the right place: the inside of your left ankle. As for eye design, you have a little more wiggle room. I opted to get the one that Olaf has as portrayed on the cover The End. I would only have gotten this one or the VFD one, not the movie design. Both are equally cool and both are canon, so its your choice.
My tat has never rubbed off (other than the first layer of ink that comes of whenever you get a tattoo, but i digress). The artist who did mine told me that the ankle is the most sensitive spot on the body to get a tattoo because of the bone, and when the needle it, I knew he was right. It took about forty minutes total for this one and I think it came out pretty well. My only advice is dont get it as thick as I did. Its a lot of extra pain filling it in, but oh well. I am very happy with how it turned out.

sorry for attempting to revive this thread, i was considering (emphasis on the hypothetical) about getting either a brett helequist drawing or vfd tattoo for my birthday and was wondering if anyone (in the past six years since anyone's replied to this lol) has gotten a vfd tattoo?
the books taught me a lot about resilience as a kid growing up around 'unfortunate' circumstances. i know a lot of people who have harry potter tattoos etc and the author ended up being a racist terf (obviously handler wouldn't it's just an example), so i would also like to know the perspective of people who have had theirs for a while and whether they regret it and stuff.
