There is obviously some confusion concerning J.S. as a character in TPP. Multiple characters are also referred to as J.S. (Justice Strauss, Jerome Squalor). I'm just wondering if anyone has figured out who the real J.S. is, meaning the shadowy man smoking a cigarette who shows up in chapter 9 or 10. Speculation or ideas are more than welcome.

Jacques Snicket is another J.S.

There you go! There are a bunch, but it's the shadowy cigarette man that I'm confused about...

The cigarette man in TPP is sometimes thought to be Lemony. The other various J.Ss referred to throughout the story can mostly be accurately guessed on a case-by-case basis (Jacques is often eliminated by the characters and by extension the readers as a candidate for the initials, since everyone knows him to be dead. This is re-emphasizing the confusion theme dominate in TPP).

Was it not implied that J.S was an impostor? The shadowy cigarette man who drives the taxi is thought to be Lemony. He also appears in TRR and TWW.

Kit, in Chapter Two, accuses J.S. of being an impostor on the understanding that they're impersonating Jacques, but we never hear anything about that again, so she may have simply underestimated the number of people with the initials J.S. We never find out who the J.S. sneaking around the basement in TPP was, although it was probably simply Jerome, just to conserve the number of outside references. There's also the J.S. who sent Mr. Poe to the beach at the end of TGG, who is presumably also the J.S. who Quigley copied his Volunteer Factual Dispatch to. But those don't have to be the same J.S.! Quigley would have written to an ally, but probably only an enemy would want Mr. Poe to intercept the Baudelaires, and of course the telegram would have gone to anyone with the initials J.S. I like to think there's another J.S. we don't know about - a villain picking up messages intended for volunteers and sabotaging their plans. But what's most important is that many of the J.S.s simply aren't explained.

I agree, that there are many different J.S's and some are volunteers and others are villains. Although I was sort of hoping for a much clearer answer toward the end of the series, but oh well. Handler knew what he was doing when he wrote the books so he knew we would have to come to our own conclusions.

One thing we should remember to look out for in All The Wrong Questions is a character with the initials J.S. I wouldn't be surprised to see another one turn up and add another potential twist to this mystery.
