Whilst absent mindedly flicking through TGG this evening, I noticed a misprint. Normally when you open the book there is the ex libris page, followed by a title page, followed by a list of the previous books on one side and on the other side a small circular image and a title, author, illustrator etc. However in my copy of TGG the list of previous books takes up two pages. On the left it is listed: A series of unfortunate events The Bad Beginning The Reptile Room The Wide Window The miserable Mill The Austere Academy then on the right page there are the remaining books listed. I would upload a picture but my camera is currently going haywire. Does anybody else have them in their books? My copy of TGG is the British edition from 2004.

Looks to me like they simply tested a change to the formatting of the front matter because of how many previous books in the series were, then changed it back to the usual for the next book.

I think that since they were approaching a greater number of books they wanted to spread the list out so as not to overwhelm incoming readers, but then decided thirteen titles atop one another wasn't so overwhelming after all.

Yet another adorable quirk. Of course in the newer editions, the British paper backs, I suspect the formatting will be normal again. How's it laid out in Orphans! ?

The back of the first page of Orphans! lists the titles of the thirteen main books in chronological order, italicized and capitalized in the normal fashion (e.g., The Bad Beginning as opposed to THE BAD BEGINNING). These are listed under A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. You'll then find the heading "Supplementary Materials," under which reads Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography and The Beatrice Letters. Ditto for Murder! and Disappearance!.
