I only just finished book the 13th a few months ago, a little late I know. However, I must say that I was a bit saddened and shocked upon finishing the last book and realizing that we only see Duncan and Isadora for three books, and then..... that's it. Somewhere in the back of my mind I kept thinking that we were going to see them again, at least one last time, either in TPP or TE. I kept thinking it would be either those two books or at least TE that we would finally see both them and Hector still up in their hot-air mobile home being spotted by the Baudelaire's or something. But no... they take off in the mobile home in TVV, and you never see them again. You only hear about them being swallowed up by the "Great Unknown", along with the others. I'm not shocked anymore of course, but I'm still sad. It's amazing how in just three short books I could grow attached to those characters, but I did. Even Quigley who we only really see in TSS was someone I thought would finally be a good friend for the Baudelaire's. And I was also sad to realize the same fate happened to him, before he could see any of them again.
Did anyone else have the same reaction when they finished the series? And the funny thing is that it wasn't until after the series ended that it actually dawned on me, and I thought "hey wait a minute, we never saw them again!" And I'm still sad for them.

Yeah, it took me a while to realise that some of the things from the TBB Rare Edition Author's Notes never came true. And it's also sometimes surprising to realise that a lot of characters who we might think of as "important" really aren't in the books much - Fiona and Widdershins are in one book, Quigley's in one book, the Quagmires are in three but very little of two of those. I agree that it does seem kind of incomplete that they never appeared again, even if we found out what happened to them off-screen. Although TSS, TGG and TPP kind of demonstrate that sometimes it's easier to bring back minor characters than major ones. Major ones have to have a good reason to return and have to do something important. But characters like Bruce and Phil and the teachers can be around for any wacky reason.

Snicket has a gift for bringing us close to characters in a short amount of time - and tearing us away just as quickly. Consider Dewey, or for that matter most kind adults in the children's lives. It's only appropriate, of course, that the Baudelaires are pushed away from anything that brings them comfort, but it's indeed saddening we never hear more of the characters who do survive the unfortunate events brought their way. The Quagmire situation was resolved neatly, I feel, given the circumstances, but it's nonetheless something of a disappointment the Baudelaires never see them again - at least, that we read about.

Yeah I agree, I really wanted to see some kind of reunion between them and the Baudelaire's. Even if it was just spotting them up in the hot-air mobile home, anything would have been satisfying. But obviously, Handler knew what he was doing when he wrote the series, so we just have to accept it for what it is. And yes! Dewey, I also became quite fond of him, and we only get to know him for like, a couple of chapters. But you're right, Handler does have a knack for creating likable characters in just a short amount of time.
