Well, we don't actually know Olaf's surname. 'Count Olaf Markson' sounds a bit improbable, but who knows? Or it may just be a name she has adopted as a disguise.

We should start a "S. Theodora Markson - who is she/what do we know about her?" thread. Anyway, I agree that text is spoken by Theodora as that creates dramatic irony, which Snicket loves. "People die on vacation all the time" - Lemony and Theodora aren't on vacation, aren't they?

Feel free to start such a thread if you want to, Kensicle! Although we really only have two chapters' worth of information to go on. Imagine how exciting things will be at last when the whole book comes out.
Good point about the vacation. They're on a job, or a mission. But S. Theodora Markson isn't a very good chaperone, so the distinction might not quite be so clear to her, if it's her speaking.

Theadora is certainly a curious character. Her bossy nature and (perhaps) unwarranted self-assurance are indeed traits at least somewhat reminiscent of Olaf. On the other hand, she rescued Lemony from his "parents" and is apparently working as a volunteer, so her intentions remain unclear.
Perhaps by "vacation" Theadora is referring to other people's vacation - is Stain'd-by-the-Sea a tourist attraction?

That could easily then come back to the "presumed dead or on vacation" we've heard mentioned in the calender then.

I suppose you mean the ASOUE 2004 calendar, as the ATWQ calendar quotes all had to do with ink? It's an interesting connection, nonetheless. The quote plays on two possible reasons behind a person's absence, whereas "People die on vacation all the time" supposes both.

The idea of a 'vacation' cannot be easily woven into the narrative as it is now without a sudden change of pace. A 'trip' to a hotel would be conceivable. Or perhaps Lemony is complaining about a sombre article of clothing in the procured briefcase, and Theodora is rebuking him. With ironic effects, probably.

I think that scenario seems likely, somewheresafetosea.
