people don't like the line?
it seems to be a flying fox contraption being fallen from, as far as i can guess.

What's a flying fox contraption? Like a zip line?

I think it is funny that, although it is a prequel, the Art Deco art style is chronologically later than the Victorian-esque ASOUE covers. Well, not that funny. But it is still better then the US cover, that was trying to get too much on at once. The octopi, as Dante says, makes a big difference. I don't know why everyone dislikes the diagonal line- it is probably what the man fell from, as he is in the wrong position to have fell from the cliff. Well, considering that Lemony's series has always been an ambigiously anachronistic universe.

As regards the colour, I can imagine subsequent volumes looking a lot better with a different colour. A dark red or blue, for instance.

They certainly have a fetish for daring (read: "garish") colour schemes. I would be nice if subsequent volumes just stuck to complementary colours, or good ol' black and white. For that reason, I prefer the US version. But I really do like the octopi on the spine, and the composition is nice, too.

A flying fox? I would have said a ski-lift- something someone could be pushed from, especially when you consider the mountainous terrain. I also dislike the garish colour. The original ASOUE covers had the burning Baudelaire house in the background to relieve the eye- something similar would be beneficial here.

I don't know if "garish" is quite the word I'd use, but I agree it could do with something to variegate the the block of colour, even if it was just a gradient effect getting darker towards the bottom, or a large watermark of the statue or something.

I must say, the watermarked version looks very nice, it somehow makes the green look a little less lime coloured. The blue also fits in well with the colour theme of the American cover, and I also like how you've put the author name in a less cartoony font.

I especially like the black and grey ones.

The watermark would definitely need some adjusting to not go sliding off either side of the cover and make it look lop-sided, but in principle I think that one looks much better.

I personally like the grey one. I think it compliments the blue and black best

All very nice. I like the grey and the watermark ones the best. I also see that you've changed the font of 'Lemony Snicket', which is good, but a more eccentric font might be better. Like Blackadder or one of the other 'older' ones.
