This isn't my idea, hell I didn't even contribute anything to it. I just think that it should be put into the public eye again because it makes so much sense, and solves a couple of continuity issues. Okay so: Royalty names are simply codenames for different levels of ranking in VFD. This is as in Count Olaf, Duchess R, and King of Arizona. Please do not think that I am in any way responsible for this idea, I am merely conveying it to the public. I can't remember who proposed the original idea, nor find the thread it was on (sorry), but would still like to extend congratulations to whoever thought of this.

How does this interact with R. having inherited the title of Duchess of Winnipeg from her mother (in TBL)? It seems as if these codenames would serve exactly the same function as genuine titles of royalty, especially as she seems to have lived in a grand palace.

Yes, I don't see any reason to doubt that they are real titles of nobility. Olaf clearly isn't an active count in the way that R is an active Duchess - he doesn't have a large estate or anything - but he may well be descended from old European nobility.

I also think they are their real titles. It seems like all VFD members are very old rich families, so why not a Duchess and a Count?

The hereditary title may be due to some sort of VFD hierarchy (as in "The Family Tree"). Following this, Duchess' and the like may be trained by their parents or something for some sort of role. Who is to say that Olaf's family did not once have a large estate (before some sort of arson), and also could not the Duchess' palace not just be a slightly more lavish "mansion" in the fashion that most VFD families seem to have one. Also, Count Olaf may have given up on his role after the death of his parents, and possible arson of his house. What are the duchess' responsibilities exactly? Sorry if this topic was covered in TBL, our library does not have a copy, so, unfortunately I haven't read it.

The Duchess's responsibilities, as I recall it, weren't clear - only that it was an important and dangerous role. Probably this is due to the fact that it was quite a public role, as she gave a number of balls and would of course be quite noteworthy. Maybe she was a bit like Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds?

I'm not sure such aliases would fulfill their intended purposes if every rank in V.F.D. was referred to by a royal title. Mentioning multiple Kings and Duchesses in conversations would sound suspicious and attract attention from outsiders, but even if the titles were only used within the organization I think we'd see more mention of them than in just the three characters. What of the other seemingly rankless V.F.D. members, including Lemony himself?

Another thought. Maybe they titles are not infact ranks, but job descriptions (for example: The Count might have to bring in new VFDers, or The Duchess may have to lay out and clean up picnics etc. (note: I am not infact suggesting these exact jobs for these characters, it was only an example)). Following this, Olaf may still be a Count, only for the fire-starting side. Duchessism might be a skill passed down from mother to daughter.
Maybe?
