I have been reading on here this talk about the "Female Finnish Pirates" from what I believe is TBB rare edition? Well, I don't have the rare edition, and I was wondering, who are they? How do they fit into the story? I tried looking them up elsewhere but for some reason nothing much is coming up. And I think someone on here said that the Baudelaire's meet them at Briny Beach in the rare edition? So basically, what is the story-line behind it?

Throughout the series there's a constant mention of the Female Finnish Pirates, who invented the devil's tongue knot. In the TBBRE it mentions Violet meeting them the third time she visited Briny Beach, which led to many people believing they were going to turn up in The End, although they never did.

In TBB, there is a reference to the Devil's Tongue knot, one of Violet's favourite knots, as having been invented by female Finnish pirates in the fifteenth century. (I think it's mentioned again in TEE.)
In the BBRE notes, Lemony comments on this passage, saying he is trying to find out whether Violet met the present-day successors of the FFP on her third visit to Briny Beach. This led many people to believe that this would indeed happen in the last book. In fact, of course, we never meet the FFP, and we don't even know for certain that Violet reached Briny Beach a third time, though it's perfectly possible that she did, after leaving the island.
It's true that, Lemony didn't ever actually say that Violet did meet the FFP, just that he was trying to find out if she had. It's just that it seems a rather pointless teaser if it doesn't lead anywhere. I wonder if it may have been meant as a teaser, not for anything in ASOUE, but for Handler's planned pirate novel, which he may have thought at the time would be out by the time ASOUE was finished.

To add to this, the entire Rare Edition notes are typed up in Dastardly Documents in the following thread: asoue.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=documents&action=display&thread=25174I advise you to have a read. The Rare Edition came out around the same time as TSS; a lot of its hints don't pan out, but a few are referred back to, such as Jacques's investigation of the Royal Gardens fire.

The reference in TEE, by the way, comes from Violet when the knot is applied to the ersatz rope. And interviews for the pirate novel do indeed reference pirates who are female, if not their specific country of origin.
