Egmont UK posted a photograph of an "advance copy" of WCTBATH on their Twitter: At first glance I thought it had rolled back to their original draft rather than the apparently revised draft. But in actual fact they've mostly stuck to the revised draft. The watermark has been removed, which I think is a great shame, but the octopi on the spine retain their larger size, and the hawser border remains but tinted blue to match the spine rather than green - although I think that makes it harder to see, which is troublesome. We also get a glimpse at the true spine, which is the side of the book, and it looks great, in my opinion. That'll look fantastic on a bookshelf. Top marks. Also I finally realised what the building on the cover is - it's the guest cottage outside the Sallis mansion (see Chapter Three) which is probably also Ellington's hideout (see one of the finalised illustrations from the Educator's Guide). That should've been obvious before now.

Seeing it in full like that has really changed my mind about the cover, although it doesn't have a dust jacket (like the Little Brown cover appears to) which is unfortunate. The spine is looking pretty good, too.

I'm fine with the lack of a dustjacket. That this is keeping the same sort of format as Egmont's ASoUE editions is something I like. I don't think being the same as or different to ASoUE are either right or wrong choices, but I'm glad that the option exists, if you like, between Little, Brown & Co. and Hachette.

This image might be more suitable for the top post.

Just take the ":large" off the end? Inconceivable!
Actually, what's really inconceivable is that Egmont haven't announced the book on any of their own sites yet. UnfortunateEvents.com, sure, you can argue it's not directly related; AllTheWrongQuestions.com is still in teaser form. But come on, on Egmont.co.uk they have a list of forthcoming titles that goes up to November!

On the book the cover looks much better than just as a picture.

On the book the cover looks much better than just as a picture. Yes, you don't really get a very good sense of them as a real object that you can hold in your hand when it's just a digital image. It's too unreal - too much a product of the computer rather than reality. Although I guess this doesn't matter if you're buying ebooks...?

Which is why I'd never buy an ebook version of a book that really mattered to me- a book like this one.

Well, I think it's brilliant. Actually, I'm a bit jealous. They did a nice job spacing the rather lengthy title along the spine, and I like the consistency it has with ASOUE, which I think I've discussed from a marketing standpoint before.

Oh, also check out the very edge of the backcover lurking behind the front one. Looks like it will also feature some kind of drawing or interesting design around/next to the book's description.

Just found this on a time-limited Google search: I prefer this to the American cover-- the spine is especially nice. I hadn't noticed this before, but there's a darling little Beast below the cool title-bar.

The spine looks a bit crowded in this image. However, I still prefer it to the American version. The solid color circling the Beast has changed, it seems, but from the three dimensional image it appears as though they'll be sticking with the greenish color.

If you compare this to the cover in the top post, you can tell it's still outdated - it doesn't have the hawser, and the Beast is in a white circle rather than a green one. But we get the picture - this is basically the final thing, plus a few tweaks. And I think they got it so right. It has a jaunty sort of fanciness to it, and I really like imagining all the elements on the spine that could be reworked for future books - I'm sure, like with ASoUE, that Egmont will keep the octopi but recolour them, but I think they'll swap the Beast and the falling Snicket out for other art from the U.S. covers, and other colour schemes. Seeing it evolve over the series should be tremendous fun, and I think they've really understood how to make a great, interesting spine that'll look good on a bookshelf. Thanks for finding this, Antenora!

I agree with Sherry Ann that the spine does look a little bit cluttered, although maybe that's just the size of the image. I really do like the little Bombinating Beast- that'll look fantastic on a curved spine.
