I was recently lost somewhere in the darkest areas of wikipedia when I came found that the Baudelaire page is classified under the 'fictional Jews' section. Having delved into the page's history, I found this link: www.momentmag.com/Exclusive/2007/2007-02/200702-Handler.htmlI don't know whether this is real or not, as it was removed a few months after it was placed; but I was wondering whether any of you 667ers knew about this?

Yeah, I've also read in another interview (sorry don't know which one) that Handler had the Baudelaires as Jewish in mind when writing, even though it's not mentioned, only vaguely implied, in the book. I don't think I've read this particular interview yet, so thanks for that.

Yes, the Baudelaires are widely acknowledged to be paratextually Jewish. It's not in the text itself, but it's a subject Handler personally has referred to on I think more than this occasion.

There are some sources which claim Handler has announced himself more atheist than Jewish, despite his upbringing. But he has indeed declared the Baudelaires are of the Jewish persuasion, and I think we can justify this with some subtleties in the text, though it is in no way an overarching theme.

Well, it's possible to be atheist and still identify as Jewish - and DH has spoken about his attending synagogue and keeping the Yom Kippur fast.

Oh yes, and the use of Seder Plates as well, I think. But it's possibly relevant to consider his atheist status when studying the roles of religion in ASOUE.

Many times, probably. But that's okay. There's so much information out there that it's impossible for us to catalogue it all, and unreasonable to demand that it never be discovered more than once.

I'm sorry- I did search for 'religion', 'Jews', and 'Jewish', but I evidently didn't try hard enough. My apologies.

ProBoards's search function is not fantastic, so don't worry about it.
