Chapter Eiht
“…and Captain Widdershins’s submarine that lay under the sea…” - Id forotten this.
Anais - this means ‘loved one’ in latin, I think. Either that or I made it up.
Its interesting how the Baudelaires decide not to tell kit everythin.. It think it fits in with them also not telling baby Beatrice everything.
"Just had turkish coffee" - Im non to sure how this can fit in with the timeline.
The three siblings had fired - Okay, so we are leaving Olaf out completely now?
"'Of course' Kit murmured 'I should have known I'd be here.” - Oh, so this is the only island in the entire world then? she hasn’t exactly had much of a description
The noises outside recalls TUA
"I need someplace safe" - its strae that if so many members know fo the siald as bein a safe palce, the hotel denoument is called the alst safe place.
How can you secretly teach someone to yodel?
And where does Madame nordoff get the batteries?
Its interesting to think how similar this schism is to the vfd one
“..to the desperate voyages of the Quagmire triplets, who at that very moment were in circumstances just as dark although quite a bit damper than the Baudelaires’…” - Not sure what to make of that
Chapter Nine
The digging ballerinas is surely the most tenuous chapter illustration?
The dark sequence recalls something from every book
Even in a library you cannot you safe from the confusion and the mysteries of the world - which s almost the opposite of what every vfd member has bee telling the Baudelaires up until this point.
I think pretty much everything can be linked up to something in the series.
Cradles and coffins is hilarious
Worlds fail me - that sunny says this is quite fitting
The pile of white wood - the vineyard of fragrant d/rapes/ did Olaf burn it down?
Inky, of course, makes me think of ATWQ ad ink inc.
Chapter Ten
The throwing away of the tea reminds me of the start of ?1
Neiklot - tolkien spelt backwards.
Chapter Eleven
Has lemony been trying to get shipwrecked on the island to continue his research?
With Ishmaels beard and the sleigh I feel like he is father Christmas
Id actually forgotten this reference to mr poe and his hat.
Chapter Twelve
I think back at the start I made a note of how I thought the storm was detailed in chapter two, and the Baudelaires woke on the coastal shelf. I didn’t recall why it thought that, but now I have a theory - I didn’t think the medusoid mycelium was realsed until the end of this chapter, which pushes chapters 12 and 13 together, making room for the storm chapter.
Id actually forgotten Ishmael had the eye tattoo,, and that was the reason for his clay feet…. .
Chapter Thirteen
The order in which Baudelaires eat the apples is interesting - Violet, Klaus the sunny. Surely it should be the other way around as sunny is the most venerable?
I feel the islanders leave the island all to easily.
What do your parent know about surviving - This makes me think ishamel is pretty much a survivor at any cost.
(Fun Extra - my computer correct surviving to surfing )
The series bean with the Baudelaire parents dying, and now the Baudelaires are themselves parents…. Kind of. Klaus, I believe, said in the last chapter that the Baudelaire parents were still saving the, even now. Of course, I doubt they ever expected their children to wash up on the island, but they have manages to protect them anyway. .
I don’t know. That’s my attempt at something thematic.
It would be interesting to know if in any earlier drafts of either this book or the previous one would have seen the events kit relays here.
Kit will see Dewey again……
Okay that sounds cheesy
The Baudelaires realise here they will never see their parents again. They kind of accept that for the first time, just before they come ersatz parents.
Lemonys had another false death then? can we reconcile this with a past one?
Olaf turns up again unexpectedly. He just.. doesn’t matter anymore.
I believe the sinister dup burned down the Baudelaire mansion. I also expected the to turn up in this book… well no, the next ‘book’
You’re just lie your parents - and that is exalt what the Baudelaire eeded to hear. Since TPP the Baudelaires have been unsure about heir parents morality or lack thereof, but here what olafs says has the opposite effect. The Baudelaire parents were just like them, and vice versa.
Lemony says Volunteer Fire Department for the first tie, conforming it.
Ive been hurt before - Okay, macho olaf.
And… oalf dies. I wish so much I had not bee so young when I read this book, because I have no idea if that would have surfside me. I think it did surprise me, but I also did expect it at the same time.
’I visit certain graves.’ that made me cry somewhat.
The Bayelaires make the siland even safer a9ain by paltnin the trees. They do what their parents did for their children, kind of.
No matter how much you read, the whole story can ever be told - *cough*
The last three full page images… I have to seen these, except for one which I have seen courtesy of anka. Why are these missing from the books?
When I am next at the library I will look in the paperback edition and see if they are included in these more recent versions. If so I will try to buy a copy.
Update : It does have the images
Chapter Fourteen
O Death, ancient captain, it is time! Weigh anchor!
This land wearies us, O Death! Let us go!
Though the sea and the sky are as black as ink,
Our hearts that you know are filled with rays of light!
---
The Dedication and illustrations make me think… does lemony arrive on the island just as the Baudelaires leave?
No new castaways for a whole year? I though everything washed up there… Plus I think it must have been pretty bad if it was just them
The letter to the editor appears the end of the fourteenth chapter on the CD, for some reason.
So, that’s the end….. Dante, Hermes, etc… what was it like, the wilderness years without any new lemony Snicket books being released?
And so ?1. My plan is to read one chapter on each of the 13 days through October 1st-13th, leading nicely into ?2.
