sorry if this has already been discussed but when and where do you think aSoUE took place? i feel like it may have taken place somewhere in the States or maybe Europe.. and i also feel like it may have taken place awhile ago because of the clothes (mainly Violet's dresses) but that could have just been Brett's interpretation of it.. what do you think?

I think it's like a fictional time and place and time that can't really be anywhere in the real world, but similar to something in America, and a mix of several decades of the 20th century.

I do remember this being discussed before somewhere on here, but I don't know where. ASoUE has often been described as a fictional world that is 'technologically backwards.' So, the whole thing is a fusion of different times and locations; there are instances of a Victorian type of society in relation to the fashion and architecture that is described. There is early 1900s technology used like telegrams and early cars, while there are also more current things mentioned like VP Nero's supercomputer in TAA.
Also, if it were some kind of alternate history with various advanced and obsolete devices mixed in with each other, it could be no earlier than 1886 by our timeline, because that was when the first English translation of Anna Karenina came out (and it is mentioned in the series that VFD members had to read it).

Some kind of AU America, I think. Not sure about time period, though based on the technology they had it's got to be mid to late 20th century, ignoring cultural differences.

This is really a question for Perilous Places, where you will find any number of threads on the place and time of the series, including, on the front page, Time Period, Which decade? Your thoughts., and I KNOW WHERE THE SERIES TAKES PLACE!!!!!! I'm going to move this thread to Perilous Places, but while I'll leave it open, I'd encourage you to take your ideas and questions to one of those threads, to avoid too great a redundancy with still relatively recent threads (never mind that they haven't been posted in for months, they're prominent and I'd like to avoid having multiple open threads on single questions in close proximity to one another). I might merge this thread with one of the others later. For my part, though, I think anyone pursuing the time period and place of ASoUE is on a fool's errand. It doesn't have one. The setting is an amalgamation of multiple times and set in a place that is nowhere. Setting is just a vehicle for whatever references and imaginative elements Handler wants to include. All the Wrong Questions, which takes place a couple of decades before ASoUE, cites all three Harriet the Spy books, for instance, which means, if you take such evidence seriously, that it can't take place before 1979, meaning that ASoUE would have to be practically contemporary with its publication. Establishing the setting in relation to our world is missing the point because the series doesn't take place in our world. It merely borrows from it.
