Lecture series adds focus on teen readers
By Pohla Smith / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A children's authors series presented by Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures opens its 13th season this fall with a new name and a greater attention to teen readers.
The former Black, White & Read All Over lecture series is now PA&L Kids and Teens and will present five programs headlined by such popular authors as Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, who wrote "A Series of Unfortunate Events," and author/illustrator Shane Evans, who focuses on African-American history and culture.
Eryn Morgan, Arts & Lectures marketing manager, came up with the new name for the series
"There was confusion over what the series was, and we really increased focus on teen programming," she said. "We don't want them [teens] to feel like an afterthought so we wanted to improve them in our name."
Here's the schedule for the five 2013-14 PA&L Kids and Teens programs, which Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures is staging in partnership with Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. All lectures will be held at 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, Oakland, except where noted. A book signing will follow each lecture, and sales will be handled before and after the event by the staff of Mystery Lovers Bookshop of Oakmont.
• Oct. 25: Daniel Handler, who is best known for his 13-book series "A Series of Unfortunate Events," which debuted in 1999 with "The Bad Beginning," and ended in 2006 with "The End." The series also was turned into a 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey as the eccentric villain Count Olaf.
Also under his pen name Lemony Snicket, Mr. Handler has published a new series of mysteries for children named "All the Wrong Questions." The second book in that series, "When Did You See Her Last?" will be released Oct. 15. It tells the story of a missing girl and features Lemony Snicket as a detective.
Admission for all but Mr. Handler's appearance is $5 for a child and $10 for an adult. Tickets for Mr. Handler's event are $15 for children and $25 for adults.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.pittsburghlectures.org or by calling 412-622-8866. Tickets also can be bought at the box office the day of the performance, except for Mr. Handler's, which is expected to sell out before the event.
