Good luck, Lemona! I'll just extend the Announcement period of this thread now, since I'll be quite busy over the next few days.

So, I'm here (for the time being) to give my overdue report on my two meetings with our glorious leader.
As you know, I travelled to the US from Australia for that purpose, and the travel itself was not fun. I actually enjoy flying, but I ended up getting travel sickness both ways. It was completely worth it, though.
I attended events on two consecutive days, and at the first I met the nicest bookstore proprietor there ever was, who treated me as a VIP, and took me "backstage" before the event to meet DH and "hang out," as she put it. I didn't even vaguely expect that kind of privilege, and said thanks so often my mouth was probably at risk of RSI (yeah, so that's an exaggeration). Mr Handler was a delightful conversationalist, and says that he toured in Australia in 2003, which I was not aware of.
At the second event, I was not taken "backstage," but the bookstore people did reserve a front-row seat for me on the spot when I told them where I had come from. "Oh em gee" was all they could say.
The events were the epitome of wonderful, naturally.
Now comes the three questions from 667 with answers:
1) Who's your favourite member of One Direction? From Pandora. I don't think I could name them in a line-up. I'll just say "the girl".
2) How did the town of Killdeer Fields get its name? From Antenora. From a species that is no longer a resident there.
3)Do the biting tadpole creatures have a name that you can tell us? From Dante. No. Colloquially you can call it whatever you like. I'm glad this was a yes or no question.
I'll try to talk a little bit more about everything in another post, but it's almost 3am, and I have to get up reasonably early today.

Congratulations, Lemona! That sounds like a truly amazing experience.
I'm particularly interested in the Killdeer Fields answer. Is he saying there in an animal called the killdeer?

Is he saying there in an animal called the killdeer? There is. I've actually seen them, and even heard their cries in the night. Possibly their departure from Killdeer Fields is related to the flood.

Thank you very much for the early report, Lemona! It's fantastic that you were given such privileged treatment and could spend time with Mr. Handler. I'm quite happy with those answers; I agree with Antenora's thoughts on the killdeer, which suggest to me that the killdeer may have been Killdeer Fields's equivalent of the Stain'd octopi. The bitey tadpole answer seems significant, too - if Mr. Handler doesn't have a name for them, then that may indicate that they're a new or at least newly-discovered organism. I shall probably call them "inklings" from now on, then.

I think "the girl" is not specific enough.

Wow, Australia to USA is what I call dedication, but it's awesome to hear that you were taken backstage, Lemona; that is definitely more than worth it. And thank you for the brief but good interview.
At first I thought his answer to the second question was just a joke, or the official explanation of a actual jokey name, in that he meant that the fields were home to deer, which were killed. But I now remember it being mentioned here before, that a Killdeer is also a bird, which I also like, because I think that the absence of birds in Stain'd is going to become an important plot point in ATWQ.

Killdeer are so-called because the noise they make sounds (vaguely) like "kill deer, kill deer." Also of possible relevance, as some have speculated before, is their " broken wing act" which they perform to lead predators away from their nests. I agree with Antenora's thoughts on the killdeer, which suggest to me that the killdeer may have been Killdeer Fields's equivalent of the Stain'd octopi. That gives me an idea-- maybe they were hunted at one point for quill pens.

Oh yeah! That was me who mentioned the broken wing act, totally forgot about that
Nice idea with the quill pens, Antenora. I also thought the Pulpeater Moths may have been involved in some way with the bird's disappearance

Oh my goodness Lemona! That sounds so absolutely wonderful for you. I am really glad to hear that you had a good time there, and got to spent some time with the actual Handler in person! Yeeeeee Also, I'm glad to see you back around (obviously) and look forward to a time when you can have the kind of lifestyle that allows for you to be here more
