I always thought that the bible wasn't actually all homophobic and whatever, and it was just people's interpretations of it that were salsaty. But it seems that there are certain passages saying that for a man to sleep with a man, woman with woman etc. it is like really bad. How do you interpret these passages? How do you feel about the bible, and its influence on homophobia?
I like to think that either there was bias in translation, or that it's one of those things like not partaking in cloven hoof animals that are just kinda asides. IDK.

i think it's more like it's a product of its time, it mentions the keeping of slaves, and other things that we find abhorrent these days.

Also the bible contradicts itself sometimes, because it was written by many people in different times. It's not like it fell from the sky or something.

I disagree with a lot of it. Same with the Qur'an.
Personally I don't care if people are religious or not, but as long as you are a good person and behave well to others (ie. no killing, no raping, no stealing, no torture etc.) then I think you deserve a place in Heaven, if there is such a thing.
Oh, and something else about religion? It's okay to hold hateful beliefs because of your ~religion~, just don't put them into practice, please.

an original early verison of the bible featured dragons, so its opinions on homosexuality become pretty pointless util such a time as dragons start to appear in the world.

Also I sometimes think if god makes people like they are it's probably because they are supposed to be like that, if he makes people and then wants them to be different than he made them I don't know what's the point of that.

(If you don't want to read the possibly incorrect, uncertain thoughts of a religious person, you should skip this post.)
Homosexuality is one of the things that I need to find out about actually. I am a Christian (baptist, although I dislike to differentiate. This may not be what they meant during teaching, though I perceived that: As Christians our beliefs are under a new covenant with God, formed through Jesus Christ (I guess... a sort of deal?). Whereas before Jesus' time, the people following the same God lived by an old covenant formed through Moses, I think (mind you, this doesn't mean Moses and Jesus are the same. We think that the former is a person and the latter is God incarnate). I think that's why we don't worry about some of the older laws that we read in the old testament. If what is said about homosexuality is there, perhaps it's the same case. I don't know if homosexuality is mentioned in the new testament. For now, I just go with a 'love everyone, leave the judging and condemning to God' kinda thing.

So, you know.

Well, strictly speaking the Bible doesn't say -
Actually, strictly speaking the Bible doesn't say anything, it records what a lot of people have said, who, as Anka points out, didn't completely agree with one another.
But anyway, the relevant passages in the Bible don't say that we, i.e. people quite generally, shouldn't wear clothes made of different materials (or eat shellfish, or whatever). These are commands given to the people of Israel to mark them off as a special people - that's quite explicit at some points. Obviously some bits, like 'love your neighbour', are meant to have wider relevance, but it's sometimes hard to tell which bits are which.
Unfortunately, there are passages in the New Testament which condemn homosexuality too. But I think it's notable they aren't offered as positive teaching - 'Homosexuality is bad, just in case you didn't know'. Rather, they take that for granted, and say 'Idolatry leads to homosexuality! Doesn't that show how horrifying it is?'. So, yes, I think it reflects the attitudes of the time, and we can't take it as authoritative.

The Bible is like a constitution that we aren't allowed to amend. So obviously there are some really great ideas in there, and it's obviously worth some serious thought, but there's also some really awful ideas that people at the time would have thought were a given. The problem is that some people don't know how to differentiate between what applies and what doesn't.

Also, good to see you back YJ! Also, "Love everyone and leave the judging and condemning to God" sounds like a motto that more people should go with . The Bible also says you cant wear clothes made of more than one type of material. So, you know. I'll have you know I take this very seriously. I make sure never to buy anything that's not 100% of the same fabric. Everyone else is terrible.

not sure what it says about me but instead of thinking of you know the bible when i saw this thread i thought of bible as in the word the kardashians say when they swear theyre telling the truth.
i think most people have discredited the old testament references to homosexuality enough with godhatesshrimp.com and stuff like that and even the new testament shout outs can be refuted but like i dont think it really matters. homophobes like saying that the bible says its wrong but they're still going to think its wrong even if adam and steve appeared in a later section. its not a natural way to conceive a child and theres all this family values stuff too that points to one man one woman households being the best. like theres tons of ways to refute that but trust me those ways dont really matter. idk for some people of faith theres just something about homosexuality that seems wrong/scary or whatever and it doesnt matter if you're an intelligent or good person there's still a prejudice there. i know a lot of lovely people who say horrible things without even blinking and like the new testament says a million times dont hate, appreciate but talking salsa about gay people trumps that apparently.
