If you were following Mr. Snicket's work in 2007, you were probably aware of a short-lived "penny dreadful" paperback rerelease of the series, which included extra content. Part of this extra content was a serial story by Michael Kupperman entitled The Spoily Brats, an adventure-detective story of plucky young heirs. Sadly, the paperback series was discontinued, and with it, The Spoily Brats, which was left on a seemingly eternal cliffhanger after the third chapter. Well, good news! It turns out that Mr. Kupperman actually wrote a full thirteen chapters for the story, nine of which he had finished illustrating, and he now believes that the rights to the story have reverted to him and as such has posted the entire thing on his website. You can now read all thirteen chapters of The Spoily Brats - nine of them in their completed comic form, the last four in script form only - entirely for free. The Spoily Brats -- MICHAELKUPPERMANI recommend clicking on the first image and using the arrow keys to read it most comfortably. Two pages in Chapter Five have been transposed, but it's easy enough to tell. What do you think of the (rest of the) story? I'm definitely glad to be able to complete it, six years after beginning it. Edit: Updated to current links.

Oh I say! It worries me a bit, though, that he says he thinks the rights have reverted to him. lets' hope Lemony - or, perhaps more likely, Harper Collins - doesn't sue him.

Oh I forgot to leave a reply after reading this, but this is great! It's understandable that Mr. Kupperman wanted to release the rest of his art for this series after the re-release paperbacks were cancelled, and it's nice of him to put it up for free.

Well, what a splendid story! It wasn't exactly like ASOUE, was it (even though it drew on similar sources)? The bit where the advertisements being to intrude on the story, especially, takes surrealism to a level Lemony never reaches.

I think the point where the reprint series ended marks more or less the point at which The Spoily Brats stops being remotely sane.

Oh, very good! I look forward to reading this. Is it possible to determine how long ago they were posted?

No way, I can't believe those paperbacks were out six years ago! It feels so recent.

Very interesting. It makes me wonder if Brett Helquist likewise had some futher work from the paperbacks already completed when it was cancelled. I keep on hoping one day the paperbacks will come back into production, the fact that this has been leaked onto the internet kind of makes me think it won't ever happen.

Paperback versions of TMM and TAA ( Hypnotism! and Kidnapping!) were listed on Amazon at one point and might even have had release dates; similarly, I'm pretty sure we learned at one point that Helquist had material prepared for TEE, and for all we know might have gotten farther than that. If Michael Kupperman feels comfortable posting his own unused material online, I'm hoping that Helquist will one day be able to do the same.

TAA was going to be called "Kidnapping!" even though that's only in the last few pages of the book?

To be fair, when the titles are being deliberately sensational, I don't necessarily expect them to be totally accurate. What else would they've called it? The Austere Academy or, Exercise! The Austere Academy or, Exams! The Austere Academy or, Secretarial Work!
