This is a bit of an odd one, but the American Library Association has proposed an award to be funded by Lemony Snicket to be granted to "a librarian who has faced adversity with integrity and dignity intact." The enviable prize? A "generous amount of cash from Mr. Snicket’s disreputable gains, along with an odd, symbolic object from his private stash, and a certificate, which may or may not be suitable for framing." Read up on the full details here.

That is indeed a rather curious thing. I'm glad, though, to know that Mr Snicket (since it is he, not Mr Handler, who is funding this) has enough disreputable gains to be able to do something of this kind.

Okay. That's... useful, I guess? Of course, Lemony Snicket is the perfect person to lead such an award ceremony.
I think the most interesting part for me is this one: "ALA OIF will work with Lemony Snicket and his publisher, Little Brown, to promote the award and its recipient via press releases, social media, blog posts, and websites." For this might mean interviews, promo videos (with Snicket?), etc, and finally, maybe the ceremony itself will be somehow recorded, if it's an especially elaborate one. So we've got that little bit of fun to look forward to.

Maybe it's an early April Fools joke? Unless it's serious, in which case it's brilliant

An April Fool's joke over two months in advance? At that point it's just a prank. But no, this is clearly real.

If Mr. Snicket is to enter philanthropy, I think this award is perfectly fitting. I would be interested to hear about the adversity of the winner, though I don't expect anything terribly enticing.

Looks like it's all systems go for the award, which is now getting more publicity and seems a certain thing.

yep, I don't really know Upi, but even The Guardian has an online article on it (no new info though)

I picked UPI as it was the first one I saw, and also contains the detail about the award having been originally proposed just for children's librarians before being expanded to all librarians.

Can we nominate someone who's outside the US? I guess not, but if we can I have a certain librarian I want to give this award to.
