--- A boat has gone missing. Goods have been stolen. There is blood in the water. It is the twenty-first century and a crew of pirates is terrorizing the San Francisco Bay. Phil is a husband, a father, a struggling radio producer, and the owner of a large condo with a view of the water. But he’d like to be a rebel and a fortune hunter. Gwen is his daughter. She’s fourteen. She’s a student, a swimmer, and a best friend. But she’d like to be an adventurer and an outlaw. Phil teams up with his young, attractive assistant. They head for the open road, attending a conference to seal a deal. Gwen teams up with a new, fierce friend and some restless souls. They head for the open sea, stealing a boat to hunt for treasure. We Are Pirates is a novel about our desperate searches for happiness and freedom, about our wild journeys beyond the boundaries of our ordinary lives. Also, it’s about a teenage girl who pulls together a ragtag crew to commit mayhem in the San Francisco Bay, while her hapless father tries to get her home. --- Above is the synopsis of Handler's long-awaited, in-the-works-since-1999 pirate novel. Here's a reminder of the cover art: We Are Pirates will be released on 3rd February, 2015.

Wow!
It looks rather more serious than I was expecting, making it clearer why this is an adult novel.

That's quite an interesting plot. I'll probably buy it when it comes out. I do wonder though, how Handler will pull off the heavy topic of finding happiness and freedom.

That's quite an interesting plot. I'll probably buy it when it comes out. I do wonder though, how Handler will pull off the heavy topic of finding happiness and freedom. During their piratical voyage, the cast will end up shipwrecked upon a remote island. After spending a year on the island developing as characters and dealing with their emotional hang-ups, they'll sail off into the sunset and never be heard from again. Well, it worked once.

Just a heads up: Advanced Readers came out this week. From the info provided on the back, February 2015 is still the date for regular release.
I'll give my thoughts as soon as I complete it.

I do wonder why ARCs come out so early sometimes; I'd have thought everyone would have forgotten about it again by February. Regardless, I look forward to reading your impressions; congratulations on snagging a copy.

To be honest, I was surprised it came out this early. At my shoppe we usually get ARCs about two to three months in advance.

Dante or someone jog my memory: will I have to import this?

Dante or someone jog my memory: will I have to import this? Presently unclear. I'm flat-out not sure if it's getting a U.K. launch or not. However, if you get in early enough, quite often Amazon UK has a few American copies in stock around the release date, so you wouldn't have to wait or pay shipping costs.

Dante- I just got around to finishing the book. It's very hard to pin down and it didn't unfold how I expected it to at all. What I like most about Handler's writing is the themes I find in my own life, especially the relationship between father and daughter. That said, it was a bloodier affair than I expected, and I'm not sure I agreed with the ending but as always with books, the reader's baggage often comes into play with the enjoyment of a novel.
