I'm a film student from the University of Rhode Island and I made a fan-fiction prequel to the series following Lemony Snicket! It's called "Parlor Tricks and Arsonists". Taking place before the series starts, Lemony Snicket is working on a case and must uncover the secrets of who is behind it all. It was just something I always wanted to do and this was my last chance to do it. It was almost no budget and all the actors worked for free. Please let me know how you feel about it! Link is below.

Oh hey, I posted about this project of yours back in early November here. I'm glad to see it has come to fruition. I really liked the actor for Count Olaf and the cinematography was really good as well; plus a very nice ending. Congratulations!

I just watched it for the first time. Not the last.
That was incredible, particularly the cinematography. I loved it. I take my hat off to you.

Yes, I watched this myself quite recently; it's a really classy production, very professional.

Excellent.
Question: Is the background audio from about 6:45 from one of the ASOUE audiobooks?

Am I going nuts or does the guest list around 10:25 say Benedict Cumberbatch? It's just above Lemony's signature. Excellently shot, beautiful lighting. Very professional for students. I like the actress who played Beatrice.

Am I going nuts or does the guest list around 10:25 say Benedict Cumberbatch? It's just above Lemony's signature. Looking at the list again, I also notice "Fernand Widdershins" (a corruption of Fernald, presumably), and what might be a "Bertrand" (though since the first few letters aren't quite visible, at one point it looked like "Fictional").

I finally got round to watching this - I really enjoyed it. I thought the only flaw in the whole thing was the way Lemony fell down at ~18 mins (it just didn't look realistic to me), but other than that the acting was brilliant - Count Olaf was perfect. Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is forever how I'll imagine Lemony Snicket.

I am utterly amazed. I like how the ending upsets the presumed chronology between ASOUE happening and Lemony's writing them down, without actually contradicting anything in the books. Everything else that I picked up on - Olaf's great acting (kind of an oxymoron, I suppose? ) and the impressive cinematography - seems already to have been mentioned, but just in case you still come back occasionally to check for comments on this, I'll have you know that I agree with every compliment so far. I'm puzzled as to how this can have so few views and likes, its quality considered. I read that as 'Bertrand Fitzgerald'.

Awesome!! One note- I would lighten up some of the scenes, or up the contrast so the lit areas in dark scenes (most of them, haha) are a little more visible. I struggled to see a lot of important things in a lot of the shots.

HEY! Sorry I haven't responded back to any of your wonderful comments, on what is over a year now! I've been working on a few new ideas (mainly feature length scripts) and accidentally falling in a financial job. I plan on re-editing this sometime soon including the color correction which will fix the darken images, some audio correction and maybe cut it down a tad. As for some comments you made, I'd love to address them! The audio at 6:45 is actually a production of Oedipus the King from around the 60's - 70's. Most of the music is original, except for the the ballroom music which is renditions of modern songs done by the Vitamin String Quartet (including Arcade Fire, The Smiths and Beach House), La Mer by Django Reinhardt in the apartment and the Gothic Archies right at the end. I'm a huge fan of little easter eggs too. Some of the names refer to characters such as Fernald Widdershins (misspelled) and Bertrand. I loved he idea that through the books, we were teased Baudelaire's father may still be alive and I wanted to drop that one in there. The rest are cast/crew/celebrities. This was originally my final film for school (made one more rom-com mumblecore) and although, like many student filmmakers, you had to cut some corners, rewrite in the middle shooting, sacrifice quality for time, it was probably the best learning experience I ever had. I also got to work with some very talented humans. Bill (Lemony) was such a dedicated person, there 10-15 hours a day, and we paid him in pizza and bad jokes. But anyways, though I wish I made a few changes, I'm glad to hear such warm reviews and constructive criticism! Thank you so much!
