Film-wise it looks like more of the same old same old. I don't even know if it's the same director as the last HP movies, but it definitely looks like it, so it probably (and boringly) is. Story-wise I can't say, I didn't read the spin off book. I likely won't watch the movie, but I guess it will be enjoyable enough.

pretty sure this has (almost) nothing to do with the spin off book

I've read FB and it's nothing like it. The movie is a story whilst the book is a textbook about, well, fantastic beasts. Never judge a book by its movie, as I'm sure that you know from the horrendous ASOUE movie...

K then. I think I would've judged the movie by its book in this case, but I haven't read the danm thing so I wouldn't know

Well, you couldn't really turn the book into a film. Unless you did it as a documentary, David Attenborough style, I suppose. The film is about the author of the book and how he found the fantastic beasts.

Unlike the HP films, this script/story was entirely written by Rowling, so I'm fine with it not being like the book--which was a fun read. I'm excited for it.

The book is encyclopedia-style, with a few paragraphs about each beast, whereas the movie has an actual storyline in which Newt Scamander presumably meets the beasts he will write about.

in which Newt Scamander presumably meets the beasts he will write about. The movie is about the creatures escaping in New York and I'd assume that he goes on some movie-worthy adventure in order to retrieve them.

Newt is traveling--intending to stay in NYC for one night--and the creatures are already in his possession prior to somehow getting loose. How much he knows about them prior to that plot-starting event is unknown.
