There's also, I've found, an alarming number of people who haven't read the books, or haven't in a long time, but are pretending to have. There was one that said something along the lines of, "but yeah, that harpoon skit at the end was funny, but it has nothing to do with the story." Well. I guess they'll find out if Netflix gets to Season Three.
It looks like most of people's problems come from casting and tone. Tone, I have no problem with, I felt like it looked fantastic, and casting I have absolutely no complaints with either. (I've already said I liked the show's cast more than the film's, so that's obvious.) A lot of people were mad about Mr. Poe and Aunt Josephine for, well, scummy reasons. At the very least, it's obvious that they weren't following the casting when it was happening, because I didn't start hearing these kinds of complaints until this trailer dropped.
But hey, it's already the third most popular Youtube video at the moment (or third most trending, not sure how to word it), so I'll assume these people are an exceptionally vocal minority.

unfortunately the harpoon gun bit wasn't funny at all, who cares about the possible reference to later books, it felt like a crappy joke from a family comedy, which is what I'm most worried about tonally. it's not a concern that the show isn't "dark" enough, obviously i know there is plenty wackiness in the books, but that doesn't matter if they get the type of humor completely wrong. personally I thought Jim Carrey's wacky Olaf fit the tone of the books perfectly, whereas NPH's Olaf has no villainous undertones in his jokey moments.

I understand that, but I think that there's a telling contrast between Olaf in this trailer, and Olaf in the "Meet Count Olaf" teaser. NPH has continuously said that it was a treat to play such a sinister role, so I have faith in him. After all, I don't think the trailer for the film was very accurate, either. That felt very much like it was selling the movie to be one of some kind of "whimsical parent" stories. They milked the heck out of the "I can be the ultimate dad," line. And I actually like Carrey's Olaf! I'll miss his sharp, angular features, and his booming voice. But I have faith in NPH's Olaf too.

Why are we judging NPH's Olaf when we've seen like only six scenes of him, only one being "dark" or "mean"?
The harpoon gun was pretty adequate in my opinion, especially because it looks like they're in a ship.

Not because it was funny, but because the idea of "Mysterious woman dressed as gold statue stows aboard ship to confront murderous count" is one of the most Snicket things I can imagine. I suppose I'm more invested in the mystery of who this woman is than the jokes in that scene, but I'm assuming that's the point! As well as so many Jacquelyn script snippets were sent, and why they chose to end the trailer with a harpoon gun joke. It feels like they're really reaching out to their audience, which is nice.

Supposedly, there is also a theatrical trailer, and some people claim to have seen it before Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

One of the only things I'm not happy about is that they brought back the vfd spyglass which came from the movie and I always thought was childish and stupid.

Well, the spyglass was Daniel Handler's idea. I think it's interesting how they are presenting it this time, using it to decipher Sebald code. I trust this time they'll explain it better than in the movie.

[ I didn't like how the movie handled the spyglass. They seemed completely pointless. But here they seem to be used as decoders which I think is a very visual way of doing all the codes in the book. I think if done right the spyglass could actaully work really well. It's curious though. I'm doing a whole series reread I'm currently on book 10 and still no spyglass. I can't remember if it was ever mentioned. I feel like it was something Daniel handler included in his original movie script then the film used but changed not he is correcting the use of the spyglass.

Youtube comments be like "BUBUBUB NO ONE'S BETTER THAN JIM CARREY" and they didn't even know the movie is based on 13 books. Youtube comments be like "What's with the sawmill bits and Olaf in drag? That would never happen! Why do they mess with established movie canon? Ugh, I hate hollywood remakes."

Can i just say that if people arent happy with this then they have to accept that DH and their imagination of the books were different because from what I understand he was very involved here... TBH while reading the books there were boring parts so i am willing to welcome any new and perky additions to the series. One thing i remember from reading is always Laughing out loud at how ridiculous the scenes were and Neil is serving me with that. Haha is sunny gonna be the one to free Charles because i saw her bitting the rope laying ontop of him in the trailer?

The climax of TMM may have been reworked - but Dr. Orwell still has her cane, which is presumably still a swordstick. So there's got to be some sort of swordfight in there. I do think changing the whole scene was very necessary, though, as Violet did nothing except have her arms pulled and Klaus came up with an absurd invention which makes no sense on multiple levels.
Overall, I'm a lot happier for changes to be made in the Netflix version for the simple reason that Handler's on board, and I'm sure that all of us must accept that the early books really do need quite a few changes to accommodate later ideas for the overall storyline; many of the later books, especially the U.A., effectively rewrite the early books anyway. With that said, people aren't obliged to like the Netflix series, and a single filmed interpretation can never satisfy the images that every person created in their heads; personally, I'm just hoping for it to be interesting, rather than necessarily definitive. I do believe, however, that criticism should be well-informed.
Now. I'm writing a trailer breakdown at the moment, and I have a few questions for people who are better with actors than me: Does anyone know who's playing Charles? Additionally, what's the full known cast of that photograph we see? I don't know which of the two couples in the centre are Will Arnett and Cobie Smulders, and I don't know who the two men at the right end of the photograph are either.

On the picture, Will and Cobie are the couple on the left, and we still don't know who those other actors are I think. I'm not sure about the rest of the people on the picture, but I THINK Monty and Josephine are the same actors with different makeup/hair/clothes and some photoshop on; I think the same thing goes to Lemony. The person next to Josephine is Barry Sonnenfeld.
