(In spite of the trailers all playing up Olaf, I think the only reason they do that so heavily is because Olaf is highly recognizable. I believe the reason behind Olaf and really every other character, both in the movie and apparently on show, seem so much more of the focus is because in the series the Orphans are the straight man. They are the sane creatures in the ridiculous world of ASOUE While they have their funny moments most of the idiosyncrasy and the uniqueness of the books comes from supporting characters. I would argue that the supporting cast of characters are in many ways more interesting. |

And I think it'd be kind of cool if the Netflix series was released thirteen years after the movie came out. Anyway, yeah it's a really nice coincidence, just as long as they don't wait 13 years between releasing each season. |

about the internet thing throwing people off.. I'm pretty sure I just read the word "computer" somewhere in TBB.. yeah here it is "And I could have a large inventing studio," Violet said wistfully. She swung the axe down and split a log neatly in two. "Filled with gears and pulleys and wires and an elaborate computer system."

There are certainly computers in the world of ASOUE (there's also a computer repairman mentioned in TCC, I think). But the internet is more surprising - it's true that there's been a kind of internet since the 60's, but that was a secret government thing, and access didn't become universal until the 90's. If there were an internet with general access, you'd expect things to work rather differently - the Baudelaires could email Mr Poe. etc.
That said, 'online' doesn't actually have to mean on the internet - it can refer to any computer connection, so it may be an old-style bulletin board or something like that.

There's also the mention of fiber optic cable being sold at the Last Chance General Store in THH, which, while it doesn't directly confirm the existence of an internet, is typically used for high-speed data transmission. |
