I imagine the singing won't be that way. I can imagine something like Captain Sham singing something stupid while they sail back to the Damocles Dock, but not Mr. Poe singing about how much he loves his work.

I'm most surprised by the announcement of musical numbers. Obviously there's some precedent - volunteers for disease, little snicket lad, Carmelita... If they added some new songs, I suppose they could be the same kinds of songs as those - that is, that the musical numbers are completely diegetic, and are really being sung in the universe of the show. I hope that those are the kinds of musical numbers they mean. I really would not like to see Mr. Poe suddenly burst into song about a most unfortunate event / (a fire! a fire!) / a most unfortunate event / and now your parents both are dead. *shudder* I am a big musical fan, but I don'5 know if that's what I was looking for from this show. Singing is fine with me, as long as the characters are literally singing and have reason to within the story. I feel like a non-diegetic musical number would be a Vocally Frightening Derailment. We'll see! NPH said "there were a few weird song kind of things," and it sounds like Olaf is the only one who sings. I don't think you have much to worry about. They'll probably be few and far between. The example he gives, of Olaf singing to the children to welcome them to his house, seems like a nutty, Olaf-ish thing to do. I can't really see K. Todd Freeman breaking into song, from what we've seen, so I'm not sure NPH commenting on his singing ability directly ties into the show. I keep editing the salsa out of this comment, so maybe I really am just grasping at straws, trying to rationalize the musical thing, but it really doesn't make sense. If it were a musical, like a real proper musical, I think there'd be more going on to advertise that element.

I don't think they've made it into a musical, I think that there just happens to be musical elements in it. Olaf doing a song for the Baudelaire's arrival is something that could easily take place in universe, he has that type of personality. Maybe the Marvelous Marriage is a musical in this too.
I don't know why, but I for some reason, want a musical number from the Littlest Elf.

It's true that there hasn't been so much as a glimpse of a musical number in the trailers, so I really hope we're just looking at a few totally diegetic songs while the rest of the cast look on awkwardly. I have to confess that my first (and only) reaction to the earlier suggestion that there would be musical elements was "So there was still time for Netflix to screw this up."

The books are very musical. There are lots of references to songs, operas, singing, etc. throughout. I wouldn't be surprised if they fleshed that out. I doubt we'll get HUGE CHOREOGRAPHED PRODUCTION NUMBERS, but diegetic songs (with in-universe music or otherwise) referenced AS songs would not surprise me.

Remember though, the movie was originally planned as a musical, so some of those ideas may be coming back.

Idk why you're so scared of it having music or even being a musical, tbh.

Idk why you're so scared of it having music or even being a musical, tbh. I can't speak for anyone else, but musicals appeal to a very specific niche that I don't belong to. The idea of the story suddenly coming to a hault so I can watch what is essentially a music video for a song I probably don't like, instead of getting along in the story I've waited practically twelve years for- I don't like the prospect.

If that happens, the music hasn't done its job. Music in musicals need to move the story forward. That said, I feel confident they'll handle the moments well.

I agree with others I highly doubt that it turned into a blown out musical. NPH hasn't described it that way - he just said there are some and that they are really there for the humor.
Also they way he described Handler is that he is really involved so I not sure any one can past the buck onto Netflix everytime something doesn't go the way we want it. This is very much Handler's creation and he seems to think it's good idea.

Quote from the article "Olaf sings a big random musical number called “The Count,” which is his welcoming song to the kids when they first arrive. There are a few weird song kind of things"
This sounds like the songs pop up at random times not the whole show being a musical. For some reason I'm really excited about the theme since Danial wrote them himself hope they are in line with the Gothic Archie's songs.
I like how much control Handler sounded like he had. Obviously TV is a different medium then Books so it sounds like Daniel Handler used it to his advantage. I think this will be a great show even if it my be different from the books but I think that's ok.

Quick question: In the most recent trailer, we see a woman pretending to be a statue in the centre of Uncle Monty's maze, and a woman tied to a tree attempting to enter a telephone box. Regardless of whether or not she is Jacquelyn, are both of these women the same person?

Regardless of whether or not she is Jacquelyn, are both of these women the same person? I think so she is played by Sara Canning. It's hard to tell since she looks different when she is gold. But I'm pretty sure.

Oops mortinson51 you just answered lol.
