I've heard people say Bertrand took over her maiden name, but is there a trend for this throughout the series? Esme took Jerome's name when they married. How was she a Baudelaire as a child, in the Beatrice Letters, and as an adult married woman? Edit: Good points. It's true, I can't think of anything specifically saying her maiden name was Baud, only implications/red herrings. This reminds me of Snicket Sleuth's epic theory on the Sugar Bowl being empty: snicketsleuth.tumblr.com/post/161167274425/i-want-a-little-sugar-in-my-bowl-narrative

where's the evidence that she was Baudelaire as a child? the letters in TBL are stamped "LS to BB", but that was done after the fact.

Is it not true that much of the case for Beatrice having always been a Baudelaire lies in the term "the Baudelaire allergies", wherein she and her children suffer from allergies, but Bertrand is never mentioned to. I believe many have claimed over the years that in Jewish culture grooms often adopt the bride's surname, the veracity of this claim, however, I cannot attest to.

Lemony writes in one of his letters in TBL, LS to BB #5, "I will love you [...] as peppermints love your allergies". This offhand allusion is the foundation of the theory that Beatrice was a Baudelaire. However, this is not evidence that the term "the Baudelaire allergies" is derived from Beatrice. We have no evidence that the term derives from her. We have no evidence that Beatrice's allergies were fast-acting. We have no evidence on the state of their father's allergies. We have no evidence that the term "the Baudelaire allergies" does not refer specifically to the Baudelaire children themselves rather than to their extended family.
Whether or the the "LS to BB" stamp on Lemony's half of The Beatrice Letters is retroactive, there is nothing unreasonable about Beatrice having had an entirely different surname which just happened to begin with a B. There is equally also no reason that Beatrice and Bertrand might not have had the same surname, just derived from distant ends of the Baudelaire family tree or even from separate families with the same surname. Beatrice might have been an orphan raised by the Baudelaire family and taking their surname in consequence.
...Equally, of course, "the Baudelaire allergies" may indeed refer to Beatrice's side of the family and Bertrand may indeed have taken on her surname. There is no evidence either way. You can believe what you want. You are not obliged to take a side or a view. You are obliged only to accept that neither interpretation is canon.

One other piece of evidence is 'Because I loved her so much, I did not think there could be more than one Beatrice Baudelaire', which suggests that this was her name when he first loved her. Though this, like everything else, can be got round.
I tend to go with the idea that Beatrice and Bertrand were distant cousins - which must be quite common in VFD. According to canon, by the way, it seems to be Bertrand rather than Beatrice who was an adopted orphan.
On the other hand, the theory that she had another name beginning with B. also has some attraction. How about something like Bearnam?
