Snicket wiki suggests that it's possible that Widdershins lies about being F&F's stepfather and is actually their real father. Are there any reasons to suspect this? What could be the reasons for Widdershins to lie?

It wouldn't just be Widdershins's lie; Fernald and Fiona's mother and their presumed birth father would also be required to have been lying to their children for their entire lives over this. The possibility exists that somebody was lying, but such a possibility exists for any character and any situation. There is no evidence.

Could they be thinking of the Daily Punctilio calling him Fernald Widdershins? But it's more likely that's just a typical mistake form the DP.
