Ignoring the kidnapping and brainwashing of children. could something like VFD exists in real life? I know there are many spy agencies CIA,M16,KGB just to name a few, but those are government sanctioned. could something akin exist operated by civilians?

While V.F.D. is informed by a considerable dose of Cold War paranoia and espionage, I think it's chiefly derived from secret societies with pretensions to esoteric knowledge, such as the Masons or the Illuminati, only without the invocations of mysticism.

I was definitely thinking of the Freemasons. I'm just curious, how do you relate it to the Cold War? (This is a part of my historical knowledge which is admittedly lacking.) |

A lot of V.F.D. spy shenanigans, especially in TPP, strike me as being influenced by that era - the surfeit of disguises and coded messages, impenetrable plans and wheels within wheels, never knowing who to trust. It all feels like the sort of thing you might just as well read or see in an espionage thriller.
