I am so happy with my prize that I will celebrate creating a theory. I was trying to write a call "Foxy is Daniel Handler in disguise!" but I'll leave it to the future.
So...
I've been talking to one of my followers on Tumblr called p07a70-queen-gamer. He asks the right questions, and it helps me think. I really like people like that.
Today I started the conversation: Can we talk about the when ATWQ was written in Lemony’s universe? Before all ASOUE books, while writing ASOUE or after writing ASOUE? I know the story told is from before ASOUE. But did Lemony write this story after he wrote at least some of the ASOUE books?
So this text is the anticipated result of our dicursion. If there are updates, I’ll post here.
At the moment I believe that ATWQ was written between THH and TE. You must remember that I am a supporter of the theory that I myself created that Lemony took many, many years to write ASOUE. So, according to my current theory, between the writing of THH and TE, Lemony still took time to write all 4 books of ATWQ. These books were originally written as reports. After a while these reports were found, illustrated and published in book format. Why do I believe this?
Well, there is an excerpt in book 1 from ATWQ that caught my eye as soon as I read it.
Chapter 6:
“This thing was a telegram, dated six months before my graduation. It was addressed to Moxie’s father, from the town I’d never heard of. In the old code of telegram writing, the end of each sentence was marked with STOP, which made the message even more confusing than it already was. ”
Note the expression “old code of telegram”.
This means that by the time Lemony was writing this text, the act of writing the word “STOP” at the end of each sentence in a telegram was an old custom.
On the other hand, when Lemony wrote THH, he explained what it meant to write “STOP” at the end of each sentence.
“ There are two reasons why a writer would end a sentence with the word "stop” written entirely in capital letters STOP. The first is if the writer were writing a telegram, which is a coded message sent through an electrical wire STOP.“
This means that when Lemony wrote THH, it was still common for someone to write the word STOP at the end of each sentence in a telegram.
When Lemony wrote the letter to Beatrice in TBL, the letter which was a telegram … He wrote the word STOP at the end of each sentence.
When Lemony wrote a telegram to the editor at the end of TVV, Lemony wrote the word STOP at the end of each sentence.
When I explained this to @ p07a70-queen-gamer he asked the right questions:
Say it was written ASOUE, why would it be sent to VFD? The question is, why now? After all these years, why is it relevant now?
Then I explained:
I seriously think that ATWQ was written after Lemony had written THH, but before he had written TE. (In fact, I believe the most likely is that he wrote ATWQ between TPP and TE.)
I think he needed to keep his promises before he killed himself. Remember my hypothesis … My most bitter hypothesis.
@ p07a70-queen-gamer asked: "What promise was Lemony keeping by sending VFD the report on the events of ATWQ?”
I answered:
Chapter 13 of Book 4 ATWQ:
Lemony: “You can restore the library, keep the books safe from Farnsworth Pulpeater moths, and keep the accounts of my time safe and accessible”
Pip: “What acconunts?”
Lemony: “The one I plan on writing, It’s a fragmentary plot, so I can not send my complete report to one place.” That way the history of these times can not be destroyed in onbe blow Walley, Pocket, Etatosthenes, Bellerophons, - I will send some materials. “
Walleye - "You can send it to us. Paper will put up with anything that’s written on it. You can send us whatever answers yoy have found.”
Lemony: “I will send you some questions” (and if you are reading these reports then you will know them.)
Please remember an important detail in my broader theory … The underwater library of the Hotel Denouement continued to exist after the first destruction of the hotel and also continued to exist after the second destruction of the hotel.
So Lemony would have written these reports to keep his promise, sent a copy to VFD HQ, and then wrote TE.
There’s another detail. It is an engraving from the book Read something else. (It is the figure that accompanies this text.)
Note that it shows a fat adult man (I think it’s Lemony) writing about the events narrated in ATWQ. The fact that man is an adult is an indication that Lemony wrote ATWQ many years after the events recorded in ATWQ. But the additional detail is that after that, someone found the reports and made the publication in book format. Notice the chapter 4 excerpt from ATWQ book 2:
“It is my great hope that this portion of the story, should it ever be published, is not illustrated, as a person looks like a fool with a bowl over his head.”
Why is all this important? Because of Lemony’s remark about the cigarette. When Lemony was already an adult, he wrote something about cigarettes in ATWQ book 3:
“The man turned his eyes to me and I shook my head. I did not have a box of matches in my pocket, but I do not think adults should be encouraged to smoke.”
Well, that does not prove anything. But I think it is unlikely that Lemony smokes, especially after I read that phrase, and know that he as an adult wrote it. So I do not think the mysterious TPP taxi driver is Lemony.
