What a great observation of the details of the text, lsandthebooks. I had never realized this detail. His thinking involving chronology is commendable. I am confused now. LSTUA hinted that Esme's marriage was at the time of Lemony's resignation ... In addition, it implied that Esme's reason for marrying Jerome was that Jerome bought the gigantic 667 Dark Avenue apartment. (LSTUA chapter 7). For everything to make sense, I see a way out: Jerome married Esme, but did not immediately move to 667 Dark Avennue. He spent many, many years (over 14 years) living elsewhere, until finally, after the Baudelaire Mansion fire, he and Esme moved into the apartment on the top floor of the building. (Or of course, considering that Daniel Handler duplicates events to confuse you, Esme and Jerome may have moved into the penthouse shortly after their marriage, then moved elsewhere, and a few weeks before the events recorded on TEE, they returned to the penthouse.)
In this case, Jerome's letter to Jacques must have been sent after Jerome's move to Dark Avenue 667 at the time of ASOUE's major events. But it's true what you said, that it doesn't seem to make chronological sense that Esme locked the tunnel. (Of course, there will be people who will say this was another chronological mistake made by Daniel Handler, but I can't agree with that.)

Yes, they probably locked at this point. But I think the question is whether they had locked it on the day of the Baudelaire Mansion fire too. You are arguing, using chronological arguments, that this would be impossible, as Esme and Jerome moved into the penthouse just weeks before the Baudelaires were adopted by them. I know you're trying to put together arguments to blame Lemony for the fire, and clearing Olaf and Esme is part of your arguments. Congratulations for the good service. Innocent Esme is also important to me so that I can blame Beatrice.

"connect theories" is my third and fourth name respectively. Jean Lucio Connect Theories. I mean you are trying to clear Olaf and Esme from the Baudelaire Mansion fire.

1. Jerome could have been under-exaggerating when he says they just moved in a few weeks ago.
2. TUA was written after TEE, so the room above the penthouse and everything that implies could be details Snicket was trying to graft into the story even though it didn't perfectly fit the timeline.
I think Esme started the fire. I'm not sure if she and Olaf were working together or not.
