kindling means:
: Easily combustible material for starting a fire. Olaf claims that his enemies always carry books with them. Books from Olaf's point of view are simple kindling.

Yes, I agree with Jean. Olaf is definitely talking about books when he refers to kindling, and the sign of a noble person is that they have books, like Kit having books in TGG/TPP. Snicket also makes a reference to noble people carrying books when he notes Ellington Feint did not have any books, so he should have known better.
