It could be a red herring, as so many things in Olaf's and Ishmael's stories are - and the real point, of course, is the parallel with Beatrice - but I see no reason to object to the thought that the adopted baby is indeed our Bertrand.

I for sure think it's him. There isn't really proof, it's just my guess. There is so little we know about Bertrand!
It couldn't be that the older Bertrand is their father, because the children hadn't adopted a child and named him Bertrand yet, but I suppose they could have adopted another child in the future.

Since Omeros is only relatively young - 'about Klaus's age' (The End, p. 78) - so I always thought it would be unlikely for him to know anything about Bertrand Baudelaire's infancy; and therefore it was a different Bertrand. The story already involves two Bertrands, after all - the sealing schooner owner, and the baby of the same name adopted by his orphaned children.

I wouldn't discount that Omeros might know Bertrand, though. If the parents were still doing VFD work, and Omeros was involved in that, or maybe Omeros was at a "bring your child to work" day where Bertrand works, or maybe Bertrand had a secret second family and Omeros was his son. The possibilities are endless.
