To be honest I never felt the kids cared for Olaf, if they didnt push him was because Olaf turned around, this is clearer in the series as you actually see Violet and Klauss getting dangerously close to Olaf ready to push him of the boat they only stopped because Olaf turned around if he hadn't he would be at the bottom of the sea. it's being a while since I read the book and watch the the end, but even if Klauss asked how he felt, they had no problem leaving him in the cage. Also I believe that if they didn't need his help to save kit they would have left him to die by the medusoid mycelium.

Daniel Handler loved to ask the young reader to think about moral issues involving life and death, and right and wrong. I think one of the ideologies Daniel Handler wants to preach with ASOUE is that right and wrong are relative. See, Count Olaf had a weapon of mass destruction in his possession. Would it be right to kill a person who can in one hour kill hundreds of people, and in the following hours cause the contamination and death of hundreds or even thousands more? Should these questions, involving the lives of so many other people, pass in the minds of children primarily to their personal motivations to get rid of Olaf? Does it make such a difference to personally kill a single bad person than allow hundreds or even thousands to die? In ATWQ this question is addressed you know when and you know how. The story of the death of Count Olaf's parents (I now believe they were actually killed by Beatrice, Kit and Bertrand) most likely involves similar issues. Count Olaf's father is listed as a supporter of Count Olaf on LSTUA.

I agree with tonyvfd on the kids just not getting the chance to push him off the both because he turned around.
I think the kids do hate Olaf, but unlike Olaf, they have a moral code of conduct, although this moral code kind of goes by the wayside toward the end of the series. But that's why they don't treat Olaf as he treats them.
