Daniel Handler said in a video (in response to a question from this forum about Esme's maiden name) that you shouldn't assume that Esme has only 1 husband. Here's the question thread and his response video: Daniel Handler Birthday Q and A and Daniel Handler's responseThis was the question: Did you ever learn Esme Squalor's maiden name?
And this was the author's answer: You seem to be assuming there's only one husband.So...is there anything in any of the ASOUE books that confirm that Esme does have anther husband, who's last name is also Squalor?

What I guessed about this was that Jerome was Esme's most recent husband. I'm not sure how many times she might have been married before Jerome, but it could have been more than once. I mean, she's pretty unbearable to live with. Kind of makes you wonder why anyone would marry her in the first place.

To me, what that question was trying to get at was whether "Gigi" or "Geniveve" might have been Esmé's maiden name, and Handler is knocking back the question by suggesting that either of those might have been names inherited from other husbands, too.

But Gigi and Geniveve sound like first or middle names, not surnames. And they also sound very feminine. I was wondering too., why Lemony in Book 12 calls Esme "Esme Squalor" in his flashback of how he/Beatrice stole the sugar bowl from her. The sugarbowl incident happened before the Baudelaire kids were born, but Lemony calls her Esme Squalor anyway. And in the Unauthorized Autobiography, Esme's maiden name is blurred out in Lemony's review of her and Olaf's play. What would be the point in blurring it out, if she already stated her maiden name? Esme introduces herself as Esme Gigi Geniveve, she never hides her middle names. And also in the UA, Esme is called an unmarried woman. Why would the author hide her name and her being unmarried for no reason? She and Jerome definitely never hid their marriage...

I refer to my friends who are married by their married names, even though I knew them before they were married. But that is an interesting point.

He also calls Olaf by his disguised names, every single time, even though he knows that Stephano and Captain Sham and Shirley and so on are really Count Olaf. Because Daniel Handler can be, frankly, rather contrary.
