If Snicket had been present the day of the fire, it could have been because someone, maybe Kit or Jacques, tipped him off that Count Olaf was planning something nefarious, and he was trying to save his friends.

Most of the assumptions about Lemony being at home on the day of the fire are based on the wrong assumptions. In TBB Rare Edition, Lemony states that he was at the Baudelaire Mansion before it was destroyed when he talks about the mansion table. Since Lemony says she tried to tell Beatrice something at the Ball and that he had been unable to talk to Beatrice for 15 years, many think that the Ball happened at least 15 years before the fire. Hence many believe that the time of Beatrice's marriage to Bertrand was around 15 years before the fire, because of the time of Violet's conception. That would make Lemony never been in the house until the day of the fire. Associated with this, the Baudelaire siblings had never heard of Lemony until the events recorded on TE. However, the wrong assumptions is that the Masked Ball happened after the fire. Besides, Lemony could have been in the house undercover.
