From the Snicket family tree. Or is this a different Charles?
Lemony should be the same age as the Baudelaire parents, and since Violet was in her teens before they died, the parents were probably in their late 30s. So if Lemony is also around 40 years old, his grandfather may only be in his early 80s...
I thought it was interesting how in the Nerflix series, Charles' partner Sir has white hair.
And Sir has been running the mill for a long time, because he helped to build the Hotel Denouement and also the Baudelaire and Quagmire and Snicket mansions. Although, was this detail about building the mansions only in the Netflix series, or is that book canon? I know building the hotel is book canon...

(U.A. p. 170)
So it's reasonable to speculate that Sir has been in the business for quite a long time; but it's also reasonable to speculate that Sir may not be the first owner of Lucky Smells Lumbermill; it might have been in business for a long time before he took it over. That would explain why V.F.D. associates with such an exploitative business, actually.
Oh, but so far as Charles goes, it strikes me as unlikely that he is Chas. Snicket. Kit seems to refer to him by name in TPP, which would be unlikely if they are grandparent and grandchild. (TPP p. 33)

If we suppose Charles come from a VFD family (which isn't clear - Dewey seems deliberately vague about whether he has a VFD background), he might be named after Chas. Snicket.
I also find your maths a bit confusing. Surely L's grandfather has to be at least forty years or so older than him, which makes him around eighty. (It's true some 667ers who are not forty years younger than me have claimed me as their grandfather, but I was always rather dubious about that.)
In my headcanon Charles is Esme's brother (because Esme in 'For Esme with Love and Squalor' has a brother called Charles).

Just typed it wrong. I was trying to show that the Grandfather may still be alive...

In my headcanon Charles is Esme's brother (because Esme in 'For Esme with Love and Squalor' has a brother called Charles). I would almost think Jerome and Charles would be siblings, due to their similar demeanor. But that's an entertaining idea. I think it's unlikely due more to how he acts with the children than anything else. If he was almost their great-grandfather, you'd think he'd recognize their last name and try to help them more. I would also expect Charles Snicket to show more gumption and not be such a push over.

I highly doubt it, since he's never described as that old and never called Chas(Chas IS short for Charles, but Charles is only ever referred to as Charles), although it is technically possible that he's named after Chas Snicket. Also, Kit refers to him by name, which I don't think she'd do if he were her grandfather. In my headcanon he's Esme's brother since Esme in For Esme With Love And Squalor has a brother named Charles(incidentally, the author of For Esme With Love And Squalor was named Jerome).
