I'm not sure why this question is in my head, but I wonder if the Baudelaires were American or not? Or maybe they're just living in a random universe like ours, but not ours. That's cool.

I wonder if the Baudelaires were American or not? We had some talk about it. I currently believe that North America in Averse (this is a word created by Dante and refers to the universe of Lemony Snicket, not the Green Arrow) is divided into several kingdoms (subdivided into duchies), and politically independent cities. There may be a confederation with some states. There may be a central government uniting all these political units, and there should be a minimum constitution for all these units. The evidence for all of these conclusions is: 1- the message of an Arizona King, the fact that the city of VFD has its own laws, the fact that there is a Duchess of Winnipeg, the fact that the Baudelaires and Mr. Poe can travel freely around region, the fact that there is a Supreme Court. (If there is a Supreme Court, it is because there are lower courts. The Supreme Court generally decides on matters involving the constitution of a nation, so there must be a minimum constitution for the entire region. In TWW Snicket writes that Violet had a hive the shape of the state of Minnesota.) If I were to name this country, I would call it United States, Kingdoms, and Cities of America. (USKCA). Or maybe they're just living in a random universe like ours, but not ours. That's cool. Certainly Averse is similar to ours, but different in some very blobvious ways.
