As one of the newer members on here, I am trying to apply for a double degree between my country (Australia), and France. In our high school system, we attend university based on final year and examination marks, and do not have to write any application essays. But, because my course is overseas, I have to write an essay. I have nooo idea how to do this, and I was wondering if any fellow volunteers could help a girl out.
I am very shy, do I write from the perspective of "let me in I really wanna gooo" or "I am the best student that ever existed, you have to let me in"? I really do not know how to approach this at all, any help would be much appreciated
P.S I have also heard a rumour that Americans pay tutors to help them with their college applications Is this true? The university (SciencesPo), that I hope to get into is very competitive and I am worried I will be competing with professionals.

Well, I think that in the first place you can help us to help you. Why do you want to go to study in France so badly? Is there a specific university that you really want to go to, or do you just want to be in France?
Of course, if it's both, this is also a good thing. I'm sure the judges will appreciate the fact that you're being honest. Also, what is the reputation of the university you want to enter? Is anything about this reputation important to you?

It's a specific university - Sciences Po. I lived in France for 5 months close to the campus I want to go to, so I have some friends and "family" there. The degree is also really cool, because you get to do intensive language courses and cultural study in French, as well as a language of your choice. The reputation is really good, that's why I am scared that my marks and achievements will not be good enough to get in. I don't care about the status, but I would love to go because it matches my interests. I think 30-50% of all students there are international students too, so it will be cool to make friends with people from around the world (like on here !!!!)

Well, I think we can think of the first paragraph of your text. Start by writing a sentence that will be the big summary of your biggest motivation to go to that college. Do you need to write this in French? Anyway, the idea is to sketch your first paragraph. This sketch is like the sketch of a painted portrait of a person. It is the basis of your entire text, but it will need to be improved later by choosing appropriate words. I will put an example. As I said, the first step is to write a sentence that sums up your motivation. Something like "I want to enter Sciences Po. Because I want to have a quality education in France in an environment that I am sure will be familiar to me, that will favor my studies in languages and that will allow me to create a network of friends from different parts of the world.(You talked about interests ... what interests would be those that match yours? The more specific you are in these texts, the better it is). I lived for 5 months near the university campus so I know from experience how intellectually exciting it is to live with students and professors at this university, and how good Sciences Po's reputation is. I am passionate about French culture, and it has become one of my life goals to study with you as I delve into the cultural aspects of this country with the help of your studies in French.
This is just an example of an outline of the first paragraph. In the next few paragraphs you will need to substantiate each statement with evidence that it is true and that you really know what you are talking about.(And how do you know. Be sure that what proves your degree of interest is the time you spend researching the details of what you like. Like ... I really like Asoue. And what proves that are my theories. Because they are evidence that I spend time researching and thinking about Asoue. So the theories are full of details that casual readers don't even bother to pay attention to. You have to do with the university what I do with my theories. Who do you know who has studied there? What do you know about this person and how did that person motivate you? What do you know about the history of the university that is a detail that almost nobody knows, or that even though they know almost nobody paid attention? They want a university fan with them. If you are that fan, you have to show that you are that fan.)

Before I wrote my application to get financing to study abroad, I attended an info lecture where we got some pointers on how to write the application, and I ended up being accepted. Jean Lucio is right in that you need to be specific about the country (even better the particular city) and the university you are applying to: Why do you want to go exactly there? Show that you've read up on the culture there and the things this university is offering that interest you. That you've lived in the uni's city (and have friends there) is a big plus, because it shows you've had first-hand experience on which you're basing your enthusiasm to study there.
Furthermore, show how your study there would help you in your future endeavors. For that, you need to outline (at least vaguely) the goals you've set for your educational and/or professional development; How does the study abroad fit into that? Try to be clear and honest. I think it's better to be personable (don't use colloquial language, though), rather than professionally dry in such an application.
