After years of delay for Lemony Snicket's upcoming novel Poison For Breakfast, no less a person than Daniel Handler himself has informed us that he expects the book at last to be released in " the summer of 2021". The wait now is for more precise details; and yet, as rumours of the author encountering objections from his publisher abound, none of us had really given any consideration to the possibility that the release might not be by current chief Snicket publisher Little, Brown & Co. However, a new listing for the book has appeared on Amazon.com with the book's updated synopsis, listing a summer 2021 release date of August 31st, and with the publisher listed as Liveright - a Norton imprint "for outstanding works that provoke interest and inspire readers around the world." Amazon.com: Poison For BreakfastOnline retailer listings have been wrong many times before, of course, but could these be, at long last, concrete facts about the final publication of this long-awaited text? Frankly, after so long in the dark, we have little choice but to scrabble for such breadcrumbs. But all being well, we should have mere months left before the book is finally in our hands.

Interesting that given the rumoured conflicts with his publisher about tone, the book is now being published by an imprint that's mostly known for their novels aimed at adults.

"Liveright"? Sounds kind of low-rent. Has Handler's stock fallen that far?
EDIT: Okay, it's more reputable than how it looked at first glance. But I still don't get what about this novel in particular is so "adult" that LB&C would be reluctant to publish it.

I'm keeping an open mind for now, but publisher data in listings has generally been accurate, and it does align with the information we have.

Lemony must die in the end. That must have kept LB&C away. The comparison I heard rumors involving the book "The Little Prince" must be just that.

I quickly read about the publisher ... If this is really a more philosophical book of all the Snicket books, apparently the book went to the right publisher. I don't think it's a question of being an adult book or not. I think the tone will be deeper. I can sense an even lesser adherence to this book than to the ATWQ book by the general public. But for some reason, I'm starting to think it's going to be really touching. In the interview, Daniel Handler said that participating in the creative part of the Netflix show was like looking at old photographs. He must have looked at himself in the past. So he wanted to write. He wanted to write like Lemony Snicket again. DH writes when he feels like it. So, I think what we will have in PFB is a current DH book advising old DH, through a fictional story.
I think the time it took to wait for this book was good for me. I have matured in the past few years, and have changed my view of Daniel Handler himself. I think I finally managed to understand a little more about his intentions in the past when he wrote ASOUE. But it will be interesting to look at Lemony Snicket now.
ATWQ opened up a pessimistic point of view about people, and about the future. Will we have a positive point of view for a change? After all, when you are at the bottom of the well, facing your own certain death, life gains an unexpected value.
It is a pity that the book was finished before 2020 ... It would be nice to see how 2020 affected Daniel Handler's writing as Lemony Snicket, especially for the PFB theme.

This one's starting to propagate; the Liveright edition now has listings at Amazon.co.uk and Target. It might finally, finally be happening.

Thanks for the update, Dante! "Liveright"? Sounds kind of low-rent. Has Handler's stock fallen that far? They certainly set a high bar for themselves. "A home for outstanding works that define and redefine our culture, and continue to provoke interest and inspire readers around the world." How do you follow that with a list of titles? And, on a different note: How soon before release do covers generally become available? Edit: Other details of interest on the Amazon page: Publisher : Liveright (August 31, 2021) Language : English Hardcover : 176 pages ISBN-10 : 1324090626 ISBN-13 : 978-1324090625 Reading age : 10 - 14 years Grade level : 5 - 9 Item Weight : 1.74 pounds

It's interesting that this book's page count has increased by so much... I'm guessing that the font will be large (just like ASOUE and ATWQ) and that there will be some illustrations, and that those have upped the page count. Perhaps the 112 number was for an earlier draft?

Diagramming is the art of making a physical book more attractive and interesting than a digital one.

Quite frankly, I have historically tended to take page counts on retailer websites with a pinch of salt. They've improved over the years, but the fact that we have seen a change is in itself an indication that undue emphasis has been attached to it.

I seem to have wandered out of the forum during a lot of PfB talk.....could anyone recap the "publisher not liking the book" story? I'm fascinated by the real world backstory of books.
Also, I work at a bookstore, I can see if I can dig anything up re: concrete info next time I'm in.
