About a month ago, some new people moved into the flat above mine. They are pretty noisy, but only usually around 10pm - 11pm. I go to bed around 10pm these days (I'm an old lady now), and last night they actually woke me up and kept me up much later with their noise.
The noise is creaky floorboards (the flats were built in the 50s), and it sounds a lot like they are doing DIY/moving and lifting heavy stuff. Often I hear thuds above me as well as footsteps.
Seriously considering popping round upstairs (under the guise of introducing myself as their new neighbour) or leaving a (polite, but firm) note, asking them to limit noise after 10pm or do it in another room that isn't directly above my bedroom.
Do you find this reasonable? What would you do in this situation?

Pop round under the guise of introducing yourself whilst casually carrying an axe over your shoulder, and then leave them the firm note with a little stick-man drawing of you cutting of their heads.

Pop round under the guise of introducing yourself whilst casually carrying an axe over your shoulder, and then leave them the firm note with a little stick-man drawing of you cutting of their heads. Bring them a gift as cheap as jelly, and casually comment that you live just below them... After an awkward pause, you might say something like "I understand you certainly have a lot of work to do, but I have to be honestly: I really need to sleep from 10:00 pm because of a doctor's recommendation. (Doctors really recommend things like that.) And I think I could sleep better if you guys could avoid the noise from that time on. I don't want to sound like a boring neighbor, but it's a health issue."

Maybe you could play some equally bothersome noise in retaliation? Jim Carrey as Olaf? Annie the Musical? A musical saw concert? The possibilities are endless…

dunno what the scottish laws are, but after 10pm here, it warrants a noise complaint.im sure a constable would love to come a'knocking. i think Jl's advice is best to slide it into conversation, but you are absolutely in your right to warn them.
if they continue, however... we can get creative

Thanks for your suggestions everyone
I did end up popping upstairs this morning, and was surprised to find it's actually two girls who are my age living there. The girl who answered the door said her flatmate got home late last night, but that she wasn't doing DIY (she's apparently just insanely noisy). It was a bit of an awkward interaction but what can you do

This is just one example that shows that good dialogue can prevent wars.
