My city has been hit by a severe storm, about 38 people have been reported dead so far, and no official figures for missing persons are known. This happened yesterday. The area hit was where my wife works, but she wasn't working yesterday. A school has collapsed and some children have died or are missing and possibly dead. My city is in chaos. There were many floods and many landslides. One of the hardest hit areas was the city's commercial center. I had to pick up my brother-in-law from work last night when the water went down, and the scene looked like a natural disaster movie, with several crashed cars, which were washed away by the water and ended up on some pole or wall upside down. There was a lot of debris and mud everywhere, as well as a huge traffic jam. Several ambulances passed us. We've been following the news, and it's really been very difficult for all of us.

Damn Jean, that's terrible and really scary. Is this kind of situations common there or is this an anomaly?

Sorry to hear that, JL, hope you and your family keep safe and well.
Interestingly enough, my city is also being hit by not one, but two storms this week (although hopefully the effects won't be as devastating as they have been in your part of the world). I think it's a consequence of climate change. I work in an energy company, and when there are storms we get drafted in to call vulnerable people and offer support for those without power, so we're all on standby this week for that and over the weekend alongside our normal day-to-day duties.

Damn Jean, that's terrible and really scary. Is this kind of situations common there or is this an anomaly? The last time something like this happened was in 2011, but it didn't hit the same spot. In 2011, storms hit a group of cities in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This time it just focused on my city.

The situation in my city has been shown to be worse even than I imagined.

So sorry to hear about this. The weather here is alright right now, just cold AF, but I'm probably going to drift out to sea after the Big One.

All the best to your friends and family, Jean. My hometown was also right next to some devastating floods last year and it was a scary sight. I hope you pull through this alright.
It's supposed to be stormy here this week too, but so far it's not much more than windy.

Thanks, Terry. At the moment the death toll stands at 169.

I’m so sorry to hear about this. I only just saw this, and it’s awful to think that terrible things like this happen in the world so often. I hope you and everyone close to you stays safe, and I’m sending good wishes your way.
