What are your thoughts on the infamous Oscar's incident this week?

I think there are several factors at play here.
First of all, what was Chris Rock's intent behind the joke. It's something people are debating, but tbh, does the intent of a joke matter when its still said and causes offence to someone regardless? No, not really. I'm all for being offensive, but not to somebodys face, and if you're going to make any kind of joke about anybody, you have to deal with the reaction you get. Second there is the scale of reaction. First of all I do think a lot of the media has blown this whole thing out of proportion, it was a slap, with (as I read it) an element of jokiness mixed with it. I don't think Will Smith really knew what he was doing. Was it a wise thing to do? No. But my gut tells me I probably would have done the same thing in his situation, so I can't say I feel he did the wrong thing there. Just maybe not the right thing either.

i dont have any thoughts except that it was f##n stupid of will. 1) his oscar win was and is going to be forever overshadowed by his severe overreaction. 2) if it was a non-celebrity who did that, they'd be arrested. 3) now everyone who thinks it was a cool thing to do will be encouraged to physically assault comedians on stage for making a joke. he's set a major bad example.
rock's joke was in bad taste for sure, but it didn't cross any lines, and jokes like that come with the territory if you're there (or if you're a famous person, for that matter). shouting "keep my wife's name out of your f##n mouth" like will did at the end would have done the job just fine. violence should never be the answer to somebody's words.

will laughed at the joke and then retracted when he saw jada's reaction... personally flipping him off would have probably got the message across. much to do about nothing when there are wars going on.

It'd have been actually good if it was Jada who hit him for that joke instead of Will

Here's what I think: It's complicated being a married man. What Will did may seem far-fetched, but he was left with no way out from the moment he found the joke funny. The wife knows her husband, and the husband knows the look of the wife. It's something that only couples who have been together for a long time can understand.
He knew she knew he found the joke funny. In that moment he visualized his entire married life going down the drain after he had fought so hard to save their marriage. He needed to act fast. How do you prove your love for your wife after she is mocked in public?
He needed to do something that would really make a big impact on her. He needed to show that he wasn't ashamed to act like a man to defend his wife's honor, and to prove that he didn't find the joke funny (although he did). So, he quickly thought of a solution: pretend he'd lost his mind in rage. But of course, he didn't want to hurt CR.
A really enraged man doesn't slap another man. A really enraged man throws punches, plural. WS was fully aware of what he was doing. He was trying to save his marriage. And if he needed to push the limits a little bit because of that, he figured it was worth it. And then he acted by slapping and then cursing.
It's precipitated that when he sat down he realized that she didn't believe the slap. As I said, the woman knows the man. She realized he was acting. When he realized that she had, then he had to try to prove that he had really lost his mind, and for that he shouted insults.
A man who really loses his temper doesn't sit quietly and swear after beating another man: he either swears without hitting or swears while hitting. Will Smith was acting all the time.
I hope he got it right.

It sort of surprised me that everyone seemed to think because he initially laughed he must have found it funny; my first thought was that he laughed automatically because it's the sort of event where you're expected to laugh so you do so on cue, and then a moment later the actual meaning sinks in. I know I've experienced that sort of thing before. But it's impossible to know.

^I thought the same, it was probably just a knee-jerk reaction

Then he looked at his wife, realized that there was something wrong there. She rolled her eyes in disapproval. And she realized he was laughing. And the rest followed according to my theory. How about that?
