Well, media tends to cover what's interesting/important/relevant to a specific demographic. It's only natural that the death of a famous person it's going to be more focused than a non-famous person.
In that sense, it's also natural that the death of an Argentinian celebrity, to say something, gets coverage only in Argentinian media and not in American media, since they probably don't know/don't care the person.

By definition, famous people somehow affect many people's lives. So that the death of a famous person affects more people as well. Humans have a tendency to get attached to characters, and famous people are almost like characters. If we are affected by the death of fictional people, let alone real-life characters... But, rest assured, that the depth of this pain is very small. The relatives and friends of those considered insignificant by the media will feel the pain much deeper and for much longer than the pain caused by the death of a famous person to a distant fan.
I'm a religious person and I believe in God, and I don't hide it. I believe that the value of a person's death is correctly measured by God and no one else, because only God can actually do something for someone who has already died. It doesn't matter how many people cry out or are sad or publicize someone's death, what really matters is whether God will resurrect that person in the future or not. Anything else is insignificant compared to the prospect of living again.

Imagine I run a newspaper company. (Does anyone besides me still read newspapers? Whatever.) I hear reports of two people dying. One is some random guy, and one is a famous singer. For some contrived reason, I only have space for one article. Do I publish the article on someone everyone's heard of, or the one that one dude's family will care about? It's not a "pedestal", it's basic newsworthiness.

I don't think how much a person is valued is reflected in how much is reported about their life or death. The most famous people normally also have the most people disliking them and possibly cheering for their death.

I just think it's entirely disgusting. What's disgusting, the concept of some people being more well known than others? That's more or less a universal constant.

Well, if we were to grieve for everyone who dies then no one would ever be happy considering that multiple people die per day.
