I don't really have much to say about this one. The Quagmires are nice, as the only non-Baudelaire characters who aren't evil or more incompetent than a lobotomized stinkbug. V.F.D. "appears", a phrase which here means "gets mentioned at the end as nothing more than three letters." Coach Genghis furthers Olaf's technique of pretending to be people who are "above suspicion". He plays a disabled person, a woman, a person with a different religion, a foreigner, a police officer, and a pregnant woman. The only exceptions are Stephano and Mattathias. I also think the advanced computer could have worked if Nero used it properly. It gives you a proper photo of Olaf, so you could (for example) compare his facial structure with "Coach Genghis". Unfortunately Nero sees it as a deterrent in and of itself.

I have a lot to say about TAA, as it is for me one of the highlights of Daniel Handler's retcons. TAA is fundamental to understanding the Great Hiatus, demonstrated in LSTUA, and the events during the Great Hiatus are narrated here by Lemony, highlighting the Masked Ball, but also the closure of Prufrock Prep.

Chapter 1 I wouldn’t put bad cooking on the same level as murder or kidnapping, but that’s just me. I’m reminded of how the Unfortunate Associates podcast always calls Mr Poe Mr Mustard. The definition of advanced as having attained advancement is something that you never really think about because it’s such common knowledge.

A couple random observations: This book sort of marks a transition point for the series, between the phase of just living with different people while trying to avoid a disguised Olaf and the phase of the whole mystery aspect. Also, Sunny starts using more actual words here, like soup, sticky, and shark.

Chapter 2: The Baudelaires’ routine while staying alone sounds kind of fun. Since there’s no sign of a regular principal, I think Nero is actually the principal and just calls himself the vice principal because he thinks it sounds more important. If there isn’t a classroom for Sunny, she should just stay with either Violet or Klaus. Well, babies aren’t supposed to be at lumber mills either.

Chapter 3 The wallpaper in the shack is pretty tacky, but doesn’t sound that bad compared to the crabs and fungus. Have Violet and Klaus ever attended school before now? I wonder what happened to Uncle Elwyn, he sounds like he would’ve been a decent guardian. It sure is nice that the Baudelaires meet some new friends and they get to hang out in the library together.

Have Violet and Klaus ever attended school before now? Klaus says it would be nice to be in a classroom "again", so yes.

Chapter 4 I just want to say that I really like the illustration at the beginning of this chapter. I remember when Esmé's meme is meh RPed as Mr Remora.Good times. What was Nero even expecting when he hired Sunny as his secretary. Quagmire-Baudelaire Incorporated sounds like a cool idea.

I should go back to being Mr. Remora, he was a good lad

Chapter 5 Even if the Baudelaires were willing to buy Nero a bag of candy, they couldn’t because they don’t have any money. Mr Remora and Mrs Bass share a banana.I ship. Chapter 6 Imagine if the silverware less Bauds were served oatmeal, fried eggs, and syrupy pancakes all at the same time. So if Mr Remora and Mrs Bass have been teaching Prufrock Prep for 47 years, that would put them at least in their 60s. Eating scrambled eggs with your hands isn’t that hard(don’t ask me how I know).

Chapter 7 Eating scrambled eggs with your hands isn’t that hard, but eating spaghetti with your hands sounds genuinely awful. It’s pretty sweet that the Baudelaires and Quagmires share each other’s silverware and cups. I really like the descriptions of the shadows such as a deep hole and being stretched by some horrible mechanical device. I’m a little surprised Genghis knows what luminous means. Did we really need an illustration of Nero’s ass?

Chapter 8 Hey, it’s TheAsh’s profile pic. The helicopter idea would be way less complicated than making the Bauds too tired for class and having them miss Nero’s concerts. Chapter 9 The curtain anecdote is strangely wholesome. A giant floating glowing donut?Even if it’s a donut of despair, that makes me hungry. Again, how are they going to afford candy, let alone earrings?

Chapter 10 Do Nero or the teachers even know about SORE? Chapter 11 The woman disguised as a dragonfly flying away is a great, if sad, comparison. Even if Quigley were there, he wouldn’t make a very convincing Sunny. Chapter 12 Nero:Wahh, I’ve never gotten to expel a student Also Nero:I can’t expel this little brat, she’s delivers the exact same message every single evening Chapter 13 Four babies born at once are quadruplets.I’m terrible at math and even I know that.
