In language acquisition class we learned about ALG - Automatic Language Growth - which says that one automatically acquires grammar while exposed to the language in situations where you're focused on the subject rather than the language... usually you do that when it's fun, like when children play. ALG update screaming crying throwing up having to do french grammar tests (scraped through thankfully), but feel quite frustrated with my lack of progress, because the divide between my reading/listening and speaking/writing is more divorced than my parents.
i've mostly been exposed to ESL speakers so my natural cadence and vocabulary is obscured and i keep making stupid switcheroos and jumbling fixed phrases which is bemusing but frustrating. part of assimilating is changing your accent and mine was already rather neutral (ish) to begin with so i am getting less and less articulate by the day in my mother tongue.
i have old videos of me speaking french which were extremely cringe, and whilst i take videos now, i still feel leaps and bounds from C2.
a weird turn is that i can vaguely understand italian now ? i did BEGINNER italian in june of last year and havent picked it up besides one duolingo game a week, but have 5 italian friends and can understand the general vibe when they are mageeing about things which is funny.
anywayz everyone tell me about their language learning (i know Kit's tits kick ticks does foreign AND programming languages so i think she takes the cake)

No foreign language learning going on for me at the moment, but I am exposed to new programming languages at work and spent most of my week in a state of confusion.

surely most native speakers of any language can't write at C2 level ?
i saw an interview with jane birkin in her later years where she was struggling to remember english words, it was hilarious.

Sounds like you've been making progress, twigs. I've heard it before, that French writing and speaking can be learned quite separately from each other. I found the discrepancy frustrating when I gave it a try for a couple of months last year.
And I also sometimes forget a word in one language, thinking of it in another. I think it's quite normal for multilingual speakers, and you don't have to be old or Jane Birkin for that to happen.

"i, how do you say, put on, my, how do you say, shoes..."

I've dabbled in American Sign Language before. I really want to learn it, due to some people in my life using it to communicate. I know some signs, but probably can't carry a conversation.

I know quite a few individual signs, but I'd like to learn to put them together and have conversations.
