Is it the hidden message? Because that is something like
many people have the same initials, which can lead to much injustice.
If that's not it, I will get back to you on that.

Maybe at first, but if you think about it...not so disapointing. "Many individuals have the same initials, which can lead to much injustice." In Verbal Fridge Dialogue, the initials J and S were etched in the jam, but, since many individuals have the same initials, maybe it wasn't Jaques Snicket they were talking about...Maybe it is one of the "aura of menace"-people. Or maybe Count Olaf's first name starts with a J, and he is really LS's uncle or something. Or, LS's dad, Jacob Snicket...

Strauss was already mentioned.
I say Jerome over Strauss. We can say that Jerome was in VFD because he was hiking up Mt. Fraught with Mrs. Baud. Also, did you notice that every gaurdian the Baudelaires found themselves with had something to do with VFD? I think that's why Mr. Poe would let Justice Strauss take the kids...he was instructed to leave the Bauds with VFD members and Justice Strauss didn't fall into that category.

Why can't J.S. be Justice Strauss? Mr. Poe said he could not the Bauds stay with Justice Strauss because she was not a relative, which could be true. Or, Mr. Poe could be in V.F.D. I know it sounds crazy, but I have evidence suggesting it's true.First of all, the Bauds say that they know Mr. Poe because they had seen him at their parents' dinner parties, and when VFDer's get together, they have dinner parties. Also, in LSUA, one of the Various Finery Disguises is an operagoer disguise: top hat, dark coat, formal shoes, and money(to give the apperance of wealth),which sounds a lot like Mr. Poe's outfit. Lastly, Mr. Poe is always giving the Bauds to someone in or closely related to V.F.D. P.S.: When Mr. Poe comes to the Bauds on Briny Beach, he is wearing a top hat, which in TBBRE, LS says is a good place to hide things. He also says that an earlier copy of TBB reads "He(Mr. Poe) took off his tophat carfully", like there was something in it. But what, I can't figure out.

Why can't J.S. be Justice Strauss? Mr. Poe said he could not the Bauds stay with Justice Strauss because she was not a relative, which could be true. Or, Mr. Poe could be in V.F.D., probably on Count Olaf's side, so he wouldn't want them staying with someone who could actually protect them. I know it sounds crazy, but I have evidence suggesting it's true.First of all, the Bauds say that they know Mr. Poe because they had seen him at their parents' dinner parties, and when VFDer's get together, they have dinner parties. Secondly, Mr. Poe is never very helpful and always fails to see Count Olaf, or catch him once he has somehow been revealed. Also, in LSUA, one of the Various Finery Disguises is an operagoer disguise: top hat, dark coat, formal shoes, and money(to give the apperance of wealth),which sounds a lot like Mr. Poe's outfit. all very good points... but mr poe is so dim... would they let him into VFD in the first place? and do you really think that mr poe would act so oblivoius...
on the otherhand, maybe his instructions were actually "keep the children in close VFD watch/VFD members care" instead of "raise in the most conveineint way possible", so he couldnt put them in the care of Justice becuase she wasnt a VFDer at the time... maybe she is now...
after all , she does want to stop olaf

Mr. Poe isn't dim. Well, at least I'm guessing he is now. I thyink he is a metaphor for becoming an adult.
When you're little your mind is open, but a lot of adults end up closing their minds. The VFD all had open minds, still thinking and learning. Mr. Poe ended up closing his mind, and now is dumb like a brick.
On that note, does anyone have an idea where this story takes place, like a country? I was figuring England.
