i was thinking, V.F.D could stand for Violet, Fiona, and Duncan. What if they have to carry out some secret duty?

In TGG, Klaus say "We think it stands for Volunteer Fire Department" and Widdershins does correct him, he says "Aye, it's more than a fire department though," or something of the like - thus, confirming that it stands for Volunteer Fire Department.

The only problem with "Volunteer Fire Detectives" is that there would only be a one-word difference to what everyone (the Baudelaires included) thought it was, and just changing one word would be lame. Also, the two amount to pretty much the same thing.
