All right, let's look at the facts, again:
-#12 has a pretty large publicity campaign backing it.
-HarperCollins is having the title and the cover of the book secret until the day of its release.
-Look at the cover of the book. You know the border that has stuff around it, like eyes or salmon or carnival tickets? In this book, it shows fire.
Where does this leave room for the last book in the series?
I have a couple of conclusions:
1) The twelfth book is actually the last book, and Snicket will be like 'the last book is too horrible to release to the public' or whatever.
2) The twelfth book contains the climax. The thirteenth book will be a coda of sorts, after all the secrets are revealed.
I don't know. . .I mean, you have to admit that it is kind of weird. Why would they put all their efforts into promoting the second-to-last book? They didn't do nearly as much stuff for The Grim Grotto.

I don't think it's going to be the last book. I think they're just trying to catch up with the kind of publicity that Harry Potter gets. Since Daniel Handler has said there will be 13 books, he wouldn't go back on that and disappoint, or even anger, his loyal fans. Yes, there is a lot of hype going on for Book 12, but I think the hype for Book 13 will be even bigger.

[glow=red,2,300][shadow=blue,left,300]I think it's to pull more readers into it. I mean when they hear that the title and stuf won't be realsed till' the bok is, well they might get more intersted.[/shadow][/glow]

The BBRE notes specifically refer to events in Book the Thirteenth, so it must exist - and, in the context, it would be weird as a coda.
I really like my theory that there'll be an information blackout on B13, so that "nobody can learn about this awful book," although even more hype (although possibly different in nature) is entirely plausible. And I think the fire is because B12 is where things really all go completely wrong before the climax of the series.
Edit: And I guess it makes more sense to draw new readers in for the penultimate book rather than the last one.

not to mention someone paid to have their name in a book that won't exist. I think this book and 13 will almost be like one book split in two, scratch that from book 7-13 it will be like one book.

It's his duty to report this. So he will. Lemony I mean, not Handler. There is loads of hype for this book.. why not?! We wouldn't be happy if got no hype..

Why do people want hype for these books? I think they would be more appealing without the mass popularity, although I am happy for Handler.

I am afraid of all the same things you are, joshspazjosh. I am getting extremely worried that there won't be a thirteenth book, even though there is no evidence to back that up.

I have been wondering why they're putting such a veil of secrecy around book 12, when it would better be saved for book 13, but it makes sense that they want to draw in new readers, even this late in the series.
They probably won't make a fancy TNN-type website for 13, but simply not reveal any information about it.

Yeah thats what I think I think that they will just tell us what the release date is and that will be it. 12 is the second to last book in the series so if something big happens then it will make sense that they did the namelsess novel thing. Also just like hatramroany said if 12 was the last book in the series then the whole snicket sells name on ebay thing would just be a con and could result in DH getting sued.

like those who really wanted to know some of the terror of book the 12th a website would be good but book the 13th is too terrible to tell any one anything about it.

That would work; like ten years after ASOUE, the Bauds are okay, but Olaf escaped at the last moment, so he comes back and a whole bunch of stuff happens, blah, blah, blah, you fill in the ending.

After reading this thread I am not very worried anymore.
I also think that they will not reveal anything about 13 just because it must be so unfortunate.
