Is it possible that for once what is seen is what is real? That Sir just likes the color green. And is in fact a sir. Why would he change his sex? And if he is infact in a relationship with Charles, they would raise less suspicion if he was a she. Plus, maybe he's just superstitious and doesn't like to wear non-green things.

Yeah he's definitely a guy. Besides, if you had made a company with your best friend right by your side, wouldn't you grab his/her hand in the middle of a fire so as not to get separated, even if you two were of the same gender? Probably. It doesn't necessarily imply homosexuality and it certainly doesn't imply that sir's a woman.

It would not surprise me if it was the intention of the author for them to seem gay. I think it probably was intentional... Handler's certainly not saying, "They're definitely a couple", but there are some details which suggest it, and then leave it up to the reader to interpret. To me, at least, their relationship seems like a more romantic than friendly one... Sir is very rarely nice to Charles, although he confides in him more than anyone else. Charles has very little in common with Sir, but yet he seems devoted to him. Their personal connection seems stronger than their words would suggest... my feeling is that they need something other than "business partner" and even "friend" to tie them together.

Well Charles can be putting up with Sir merely because they ARE business partners, however badly Sir treats him Charles does get quite a bit of money out of the deal. And people can get very annoyed with those that work with them. But yes it is suspicious..

Sir? Female? Oh, come ON. The V.F.D. ain't THAT good at disguises, and it doesn't make sense at all. What would "her" motives be? My bet is, the reason Sir keeps his face hidden constantly is because he has some physical deformity (burned). Or, more likely, he's just a stuck-up jerk and the smoke cloud is his way of even further distancing himself from the people he abuses.
As for Sir and Charles' relationship... from The Beatrice Letters: "...Until C. realizes that S. is not deserving of his love." C. and S. are most likely Charles and Sir. That, along with the way Charles blindly defends Sir whenever he does something awful, makes it pretty clear that at least Charles likes Sir as a little more then a business partner (though it's hard to see *how*). They're such obscure characters, anyway, it's hardly enough to raise alarm amongst anyone. Not even the crazy bookburners.

To me they sound a bit like Montgomery Burns and Mr. Smithers.
