Hard to say, without page nine (on which the evidence which led to that conclusion is discussed). The man in the picture with his back turned away from the camera is generally thought to be Lemony Snicket, and he's not dead either. It could just be the best picture of the Baudelaire parents they could find, with their home burnt down - or it could be relevant for some other reason.

Of course, if the survivor is Quigley, the picture of the Bauds could be to throw off anyone who shouldn't be reading the file.

on page thirteen of the snicket file there's the picture of their parents and jacques and it said that there was one survior of the fire, wouldn't that be implying that one of the people in the picture was alive? So couldn't that just mean Jacques? i also think that Jacques was the survior, though it would be great if one of the Baudelair's parents was alive.

I am currently re-reading book 8 and am noticing a few things that you guys have forgotten:
- Page 13 said there was a survivor of the fire, contrary to the last page of this thread, this doesn't necessarily mean a baudelaire parent nor a person in the photo
- To the person who said, 'won't they read the notes already!' they did read the notes while sitting in the unfinished half of the hospital. They said they were no closer to understanding them, the notes included a page of dates, a page saying: VFD stands for volunteer... and also a piece that just said Fire.

The photo also has "a man who was turned away from the camera, so the children could not see his face, only one of his hands, which was clutching a notebook and pen as if the obscured man were a writer of some sort."
So Jaques couldn't be the survivor if Lemony is there too, though going back to Snicket's ambiguity, this might be Captain Widdershins or something, and the children wouldn't know who he was yet either...

I think that the survivor the file is referring to is actually Lemony. It would make so much more sense that way.
Still, you never know, it could definitely be somebody else.

I like someones's idea about making Olaf reveal the contents, though its almost impossible. So basically, because TPP made us catch a glimpse of Kit's note/book, we can say that they are just folders with "Files" not notebooks with scribbles. Maybe the Snicket file is a benefit and a threat to everybody.
One of the parents HAVE to be alive. Knowing that your (Baudelaires) journey for a really long time - the hardships and all, - are all just for naught is very miserable. There has to be that reward for the Baudelaires: for believing in themselves, relying on each other, facing the hardships they don't really deserve, battling the past, present and the future, the loneliness of the loss of a good home enough to last a lifetime. Not the regular basis, "from-time-time" happiness but the security and dignity that they can carry with them, making them feel less alone, less loved, and less powerful in comparison to people who takes away their supposedly happy childhood.
But then again, stories like these can make very atrocious twists. AWWW! I badly want a happy ending! Though not that happy like after all they're just going to a picnic and start anew. Ambiguous endings haunt me.

We know that the shugar bowl will keep reocuring (spelling?) But the Quags commonplace books will hopefully appear in the 13th book. I am starting a commonplace book of my own and re-reading the books.
