My theory about Dewey not being dead has proof and is a good one too.
1. When dewey got harpooned, that doesn't mean that he had to die. L.S. says that he dies so i guess thats me weak spot in this theory but it wouldn't be the first time that L.S. has tricked us.
2. When Dewey got harpooned he walked backwards towards and into the pond. but when Violet said lets get you out of the pond, Dewey said no. This was because he wanted to swim down to his underwater library and make it look like he was dead.
(this isn't about Deweys death) When Dewey was in the pond harpooned, he said kit and pointed to the sky. i think that he saw kit in the sky. kit would have been back from her mission early and she would have seen him in that situation and she would have known not to go to the hotel. also L.S. said that Dewey left a pregnant lady distressed, how could Kit of been distressed if she didn't know that Dewey was injured.

I don't think Lemony would deliberately trick us about someone's death, especially when the person in question died pretty violently, and everything he said made it clear that Dewey was dead. It'd be a really cheap trick, as even before TPP Lemony mentioned "the person killed by the Baudelaires" in an interview. It'd be hard to swim through a huge pond if you'd been struck with a harpoon, anyway. Dewey didn't think he'd survive, although the Baudelaires said he would.
And Kit was distraught from the beginning of the book, what with Jacques being dead and someone apparently impersonating him.

He's probably dead(unfortunitly)...I think he just wanted to be close to his library when he passed on

I wonder where the Dewey-Isn't-Dead notion sprouted from...

Yeah I recall someone mentioned this theory before... He is definately dead if the harpoon didn't kill him then he would have drowned. That would be quite annoying of Daniel to give him that tragic death and then just spring him back alive again.

Yes. It wouldn't be very creative on Handler's part to suddenly spring Dewey back to life (although I disliked it that he rather cavalierly killed him off. Murdering characters is generally the easy way out, and it is rather difficult to write a good death that doesn't seem completely pointless - I don't think Handler quite achieved this). Anyway, the chance that Dewey is alive is really very small.

I agree with the latest posts... Yet there may be a chance...
What if it's Frank who got harpooned instead of Dewey? Body double?

I dont think Lemony would trick us, when else has he? 2. I thought he was telling the bauds he was the dad of Kit's babe or delclaring he final love for her. 3. maybe he just wanted to die with his beloved library. 4. And finally, Kit was in destress at the beginning, becuz she knew they would not suceed.

It was Dewey. When the evidence was being submitted, both Frank and Ernest submitted their commonplace books. Dewey may sound like them, being triplets and all, but his commonplace book is the size of the hotel.
