It would be great if Dewey was alive but I just don't think he is.

It's a possibility but that would be highly fortunate because Dewey was both harpooned and drowned. And everyone knows fortunate things don't happen to the Baudelaires. Also adults in the Lemony verse fall into four types 1) Harmless/ useless 2) Harmless/ capable/ dead or missing in action 3) Evil/ useless 4) Evil/ capable

I'm sorry to say that I'd have to agree with the rest of us and say that Dewy Denoument is (sadly) dead.

I love you too, Fireman911. Anyway, Dewey's definitely dead. Oh, and have you ever been shot with a harpoon before? It stings and burns and feels cold all at the same time. Plus you can scarcely breathe and you have to gasp out these rattling sentences while the idiot who was supposed to be aiming for the crows keeps babbling about ninja princesses or whatever.

It was splashback from shooting someone else. Ricochet is a grwoing problem these days. Anyway, as I'm sure many have said, I'm pretty sure it was clearly stated that he was dead, and it isn't very snicketish to go back on that.

Been shot with a harpoon lately Ernest D? He is undoubtedly dead. Lemony said the shot "Killed someone in the room" and not only was Dewey heavily injured but also sunk straight down into the pond. And in 13 secrets it said that Lemony's niece is an orphan. Since we only know of one such person that would qualify, it would the mean that kit and dewey are dead. So yeah. He's dead. As a doornail. And I wish it were not so.

You know, Dewey's death doesn't make me very sad (please don't kill me!), because he dies in the chapter after the one he appears in. Handler didn't give me time to start likeing him. Him being the father of Kit's child makes it a bit sad though.

I didn't particularly like Dewey either. Of all the people in the room who could have been hit by the harpoon I would say he was the best choice.
1) He knew the Baudelairers were going to be on a mission in the hotel, but during the day he hid and did nothing to help when they needed it most.
2) His trusting of Justice Strauss and her associates was pure disaster for the V.F,.D. He seems to have been one of the main advocates for the trial.
3) Worst of all, he let the children be human shields for him when he was threatened with the harpoon. It was poetic justice that he ended up the target anyway.

DEWEY ISNT DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE 1) he got shot with a harpoon, which it said in the book felt heavy, so if dewey held his breath, he would sink into the underwater passageway, with the sugar bowl I hasten to add, and stay in there. 2) If you're having any doubts about /\/\ then he would stay in the bit where he can breathe, remove the harpoon, and patch himself up with hospital equipment WHICH HE UNDOUBTEDLY CATEGORISED FROM HEIMLICH and he would be safe with the bowl. 3) L.S has tricked us a lot of the time, so one other trick wouldn't make much diffrerence.

HE GOT SHOT WITH A HARPOON! He couldn't breathe, he was condemned from the moment the harpoon hit him. There's no way anyone could survive being shot with a harpoon while being underwater.

This isn't like the death of, say, Josephine, where Snicket never outright said she died. She could still be going. As has been noted, though, Snicket outright says that when that harpoon gun went off, it killed, it struck a fatal blow. Handler said in the interview that the Baudelaires killed someone. In the 13 Shocking Secrets document, then you need to fill in the name "DEWEY" in the sentence "The Baudelaires kill _ _ _ _ _" to get the right code. Dewey is dead and gone forever.
